New Ground - May 2004

Warm weather is headed our way - and great hot singings are in the air!! We truly enjoyed our April 2004 at lots of yearly repeat singings and also going to new churches and venues to share our ministry in song.
The first weekend found New Ground in our hometown of Scottsboro as part of the Eddie Crook Radio Tour. Our local radio station, WZCT, was the host station for this great night in song and invited us to be a part of the "Singing Celebration". ECC artists included the Rudds, the Gabbards, the Duvall's and ReignSong. It was great to spend a special time with our forever friend Dave Wilcox. Mickey Bell, Morning DJ at WZCT, was the emcee for the night. Mickey has also been honored as one of the Top 10 Nominees in the Small Market DJ of the Year for the Singing News Magazine. Congrats Mickey!! But we have to thank Sue Bell for the beautiful reception! This lady knows how to have cake!!! From Scottsboro it was onto Sand Rock Baptist Church. We truly enjoy our visits to this great singing church. It was good to see Tommy Hester and his family. From Sand Rock was the trek to Faith Missionary Baptist Church in Cedartown, GA. This church was ready for "church"!! Great spirit!! Hope to see ya'll again - real soon!
April 8-10th found us spending our weekend at the annual Gold City/Southmen Reunion. This three day event is sponsored by Solid Rock Productions/Jim Hefner. The Thursday night "Jim Session" found people enjoying music by Southern Image, YoungSong, Bill & Marilyn Flurry, Newlyweds Gordon & Linda Meador and New Ground. The hit of the night was definitely the womanless wedding - there were plenty of UGLY women that night!!! Friday was the first year for the "Friday Frenzy". I chartered a bus to our hometown of Scottsboro and everyone enjoyed the famous "Unclaimed Baggage Center". Have you ever lost your luggage - chances are very good that you can find your contents at "UBC". Make sure that you holler at us when you come to Scottsboro. The concert on Friday night featured Gold City, the Southmen, Florida Boys, the Perrys and YoungSong. The sold out crowd had a great time of enjoying the gospel sounds. Saturday morning was the annual Breakfast and the Bonnet Award. This year's receipitant, Eddie Wallace was a great sport taking all the ribbing!! He can tell a mean Rinderceller story, too!! I always take off on Easter Sunday so that we can be at our home churches. Dale and I were so excited about being at Rainsville Holiness Church on Easter and David was able to spend Easter Sunday with his family at Faith Presbyterian Church. Just a special day to spend with our church families and thank our "Risen Savior" for saving us!! Easter Sunday night we headed to Stevenson First Baptist Church with Brother Derrick Boyd. This preacher loves Southern Gospel Music and we love him!! It was good to see our family and so many of our friends that included Lynee, Metha, Mr. Metha, Lynn and the all kids, Carolyn and the Stanfields. It means so much to see them and hear their words of encouragement.
Calvary Assembly was our first stop on the third weekend of April. It is so weird how we got this booking. Our heat on our motorhome needed to be repaired. Well the guy that came to fix it and got us ready to go - this was back in the winter, or course. When I went to pay him for his services he said, "Aren't you the group that sings?" My answer was yes - well he said instead of paying me would you come and do a singing at my church. So I agreed. We go to his church to sing - and have an awesome singing and then they give us a great offering - I tried to tell them that no - that we were paying for our heating service - and they said - they felt led to give us the offering!! God works wonders!! Great service, heat fixed, offering to help us get down the road - it was just a unbelievable night!! Thanks to Greg Wade for all your help!! We finally got on the road around 10:30pm and had a three hour drive ahead of us - we had to be in Parrish, Alabama for a morning service at 8:00am. We were pooped, well let me say, the guys were pooped. I went to bed and depended on them to get us there!! They did a great job - and what an anointed service. We sang in the morning service then had lunch and came back for the afternoon singing. Most of you know - those afternoon singings will get ya - especially after you have eaten a big lunch. But his afternoon was an exception to the rule - over thirty people came to the altar for prayer and it was the sweetest spirit!! We are already looking forward to being back with them next February.
Well, we made it to the last weekend and it started off with a bang. New Ground was honored to be a part of the big singing held at the Shoals Theater that featured the Boatwright Sisters, New Ground and the Dove Brothers!! Great guys, great songs - love their spirit!! These guys are so easy to work with and they so encouraging!! Love the Doves!! The Boatwright Sisters are new on the scene - they are twin "17" year olds that can forever let it rip - I'm sure that you will be hearing more from the very soon!! Thanks to Jerry Edgil of WBTG in Florence, Alabama for including us on the program!! Saturday night finds us in the "big" town of Weaver, Alabama at the Weaver Congregational Holiness Church. Trish Lacks is the Song Chairperson and this lady can also sing and play the piano - we still haven't figured out why they needed New Ground. Lots of talent in this church. But we are glad that they did include us in their quarterly sing. It was good to see the Lipscombs and the Motes - friends of ours that follow us when we are in the area. Also, Jerri Motes is one of the best cooks you will ever find!! This week she blessed us with a Carmel Pound Cake - just makes your mouth water thinking about it!!! We ended the month at the Cahaba View Baptist Church near Leeds, Alabama. This is a great singing church and we had a fine time meeting lots of new friends. Sure hope we get to visit again real soon.
May takes us to Georgia, Virginia, Tennessee, Florida and the Cruise!!! Can't wait!!
Also, I want to thank everyone that nominated us for "Horizon Group of the Year" in the Singing News Fan Awards. We are honored!! All praise and glory goes to Him!!
Make sure that you come and see us when you can!! Check out our web site at http://www.newgroundministries.com

Safe Harbor
Safe Harbor - A Perfect NameJust say the name "Safe Harbor" and your mind will sail to a calm, peaceful bay along coastal waters. In the distance stands a light house that sends out a warning to all who see it that safety and security can be found in times of stormy weather and rough seas.
I think it is appropriate and fitting that many years ago Dale Vicars and Johnny Beacham chose the name "Safe Harbor" for their music ministry. Since their inception, the quartet has been a beacon that has shone the light of character and integrity. They boldly proclaim the saving message of Jesus Christ to a world lost on the sea of sin.
Safe Harbor is one of the fastest rising new artists in our genre of music and much of their success could be traced to their leadership team. Their producer is Eddie Crook whose legendary track record speaks volumes. They currently reside on the prestigious MorningStar record label. The Eddie Crook Company handles the artist's management issues with Dave Wilcox heading up the A&R and Marketing Departments for Safe Harbor. Between Crook and Wilcox, these four men can tap into over sixty years of combined wisdom, experience and counsel.
Dale Vicars, manager and baritone singer for Safe Harbor shared with this writer "It's all about the ministry for us. Otherwise, we should sell the bus, the equipment and go home!"
Safe Harbor joined the ECC in 2001 after meeting Mr. Crook and Mr. Wilcox at a company sponsored promotional concert in Pageland, SC. Wilcox recalls "I instantly liked the guys. They had such a passion you could see it all over their faces! It has been a joy to be involved with the guys from the start." Speaking of the guys, let's meet Safe Harbor.
They base their ministry in Williamston, SC. From the beginning it has been Dale Vicars (originally the tenor now the baritone singer) and Johnny Beacham as the lead singer. It is a friendship and partnership that has weathered the storms of tough times and personnel changes through these past nine years. Johnny is not only a great lead singer, he may be one of the funniest guys in the industry. A lot has been written on the internet web sites recently about the other half of this quartet. Legendary bass singer Mike Presnell joined the guys in May after retiring from singing following the demise of Perfect Heart. Mike, a multiple top ten finalist in The Singing News Fan Awards, is a fan favorite across the nation. His dry, down home, country humor is side splitting! The newest addition to Safe Harbor is an ECC alumnus Derrick Boyd as tenor. Dave Wilcox stated "It's great to have Derrick back home in the ECC family! He has always been one of my favorite people in the business."
Safe Harbor has scored multiple hit singles with each radio release according to MorningStar Records. They have been well received at The National Quartet Convention in Louisville, KY. Dale and they guys are working a substantial amount of dates with positive response from pastors, music directors and concert promoters. The consensus among industry insiders and observers is that Safe Harbor is poised to become leaders and trendsetters for our music for the next decade.

Wings of Grace - Apr 2004

Prior to 1997, we were called "Cheryl and the girls". It was not until after the tragic death of our cousin, that God revealed to Cheryl some inspiring words that would give us the name "Wings of Grace". Our dear cousin Karen was like a sister to Cheryl. Her death came as a hard blow to our family. Cheryl knew God would help us all get through the pain and sorrow of her passing, but it would take a lot of faith in knowing that God would give us the grace to make it through each day.
We had been trying to come up with a name for our group for a long time, but nothing seemed to fit. A few weeks after Karen had passed, Cheryl was in her office listening to the Ruppes sing "Under His Wings", and as she listened she prayed that God would help her through her pain of losing her closest friend, her cousin. As she prayed, it was as if a gentle voice spoke so silently and freely to her. The voice said that HE would give her the grace she needed and that HE had Karen under HIS wings. Thinking someone was in her office, Cheryl looked around to find no one there. So Cheryl prayed to the Lord to make sure she heard correctly, and she said these words. " Lord if you have Karen under your wings, you will give me grace to bear it!" Cheryl began speaking the words back and forth: wings, grace, wings, grace. That day "Wings of Grace" became our group's new name.
So many people ask us how we came up with our name, and when we share this story, people are astonished and full of praise at how God used this one situation to find a name for our group. The name "Wings of Grace" is a daily reminder to us of how passionate our Lord is and how HE keeps us sheltered under His wings of grace. As Wings of Grace, we make sure that in every concert we do, we sing about our Lords compassion and grace, and His blood that was shed so freely for all.
It was while we were working on our third project and working with songwriter Janice Stillman from Roper, NC, that Cheryl shared this story with Janice. Cheryl had felt that the Lord was dealing with her to write a song about "Wings of Grace" so she spoke to Janice about writing a song for the group, and Janice told Cheryl she would help her pray about it. Before the night was over, the Lord woke Janice up in the early morning hours and she penned the words to the song "Wings of Grace". When Janice put the song to music and contacted us to reveal the song, we were all in tears. We recorded this song on our latest project entitled: "His Blood Still Has Power", and now the song "Wings of Grace" is scheduled to be released on the Knight Promotions compilation CD Volume 15. The song will be promoted over the next 3 months, so contact your nearest Southern Gospel radio station and request this song by Wings of Grace. You can also log on to our website, http://www.wings-of-grace.com and click on our product page to hear this song.
Well, I guess this will wrap up this months entry for Wings of Grace. I hope our paths will cross one day soon.

Southern Harmony - Apr 2004

Last month was a great one for us. There's not a whole lot that I can tell you about Southern Harmony this month but I do have a few thoughts that have come to mind during those wee hours of the morning driving our bus from venue to venue. I was coming out of Mississippi the other night and while listening to a radio program , this gentleman was talking about where have all the men gone. Being a man, this caught my ear. He was giving various statistics of some type of survey indicating a lot of men now days could not perform simple tasks such as changing an automobile tire, checking oil levels and doing a vast number of tasks around home. Of course as well as you know, a large percentage of our country has changed from a manufacturing workplace to a service orientated workplace. In my opinion, this may be the reason this gentleman had the views he had.
This triggered a thought to me "Where has the Spirit Gone"? Being in gospel music for over 30 years, never accomplishing a lot of notoriety in our industry, I have always been involved in our music. I guess you could say in a seen and not heard position. I think Southern Gospel music is the best style of music God has created on this earth. I have had the pleasure of attending 26 National Quartet Conventions and I was fortunate to meet a lot of the gospel music legends in our industry. I really admire our forefathers of southern gospel music and the sacrifice they have made to pave the road for us. Please do not misunderstand me when I say I've been sitting on the sidelines watching; when in fact, I have been on the sidelines working everyday of my life since I have been in southern gospel music making our ministry a success. But as I think back of the years in Nashville of when I attended the National Quartet Convention, those early years bringing back some very good memories. I can recall the days while we moved in the booth display area, assembling our booth for the week, we would feel a spirit of anticipation for the great things we felt would happen to us this particular week. As we worked on assembling our booths, an assortment of groups maybe one or two out of various groups would just walk around the hall singing some of the old hymns of our Lord. You could hear this ring. This would ring like a choir of angels creating an atmosphere of praise, and an atmosphere of unity and love. Giving a break from the everyday stress of the commercial aspect of our industry. Sometimes I feel the commercial aspect of our industry has overshadowed the ministry, and with this in mind, the question is asked "Where has the Spirit gone"? I don't feel that I'm the only singer in Southern Gospel music that has these feelings. I feel that if we would bring back some of the old time spiritual feelings that we have had in the past, we could enjoy our ministries and our commercial endeavors a whole lot more.
Lets not forget who we are singing for and where we came from.

Master’s Voice - Apr 2004

God has been very busy (as if isn't always) in Master's Voice the past six months. So far, we have seen Ricky Knight resign and his wife get pregnant. We have seen Mike and his lovely wife Lori have a beautiful baby girl. We have been thrilled to announce that John Tidwell has persuaded Jessica to marry him. That was followed up by Mike and Lori announcing...(cough)....once again, that they are pregnant......again! All of this, while we are working on our newest CD. Well, the latest chapter also concerns Mikal. He shocked all of us with a very emotional announcement telling us that God has called him to preach. He will sing his last time with Master's Voice at the end of April.
The Lord has been dealing with him for a long time, and this is really the desire of his heart, though this decision came at quite a price. He really loves singing and traveling and spending time with us guys, but we all respect him even more now because he has the obedience to follow God's hand even when it meant giving up something he loves. We love him, and though we know he is right in the middle of God's perfect will, he will be greatly missed. Please pray for him and for us as we transition through this change.
Naturally, some of the questions that are expected is "are we gonna get another bass?" Well, for now, we are very content with being a trio. We love the bass and what it brings to our sound, but we really feel like the right thing is to be a trio for a while. Once again, I am truly in awe that the God of all creation, who spoke this whole thing into existence, is that interested in us and the ministry he has given us. Where would I be without Jesus?

Pioneers Qt - Apr 2004

At the first of March, we finally got to listen to Chris quit whining about wanting a corvette. He was able to talk his bride in to letting him purchase an older, like Chris, corvette so now he is happy and we can get some peace. Maybe we can get him to put a picture of it on the web, you never know. Also in March Hurley celebrated his 18th birthday- again (he is actually 35 now but don't tell him you found that out here). You can tell he is getting older because in the last week of February he had a senior moment when out hiking. He fell in to a ditch and sprained both ankles. The rest of the guys think he did it on purpose so that he would not have to help with equipment set up.
In April Mike is celebrating his wedding anniversary. He has to really work hard around this time of year to make up for his wife agreeing to marry him. Also this month the Pioneers will be singing at the second annual Noonday Association Seniors Day at First Baptist Church in Smyrna, GA. Be sure and check out the website for a complete schedule listing. We would love to see you guys out on the road somewhere.
As always, pray for us and all groups as we spend much of our time on the roads of this great country, trying to spread the good news of Jesus. Be it here or in Heaven, we hope to see you on the right trail.
