Why Southern Gospel?

For us it all started when the boys, in their early teens, attended a Cathedral Quartet concert here in the Dallas area. They became fans and went back to church to try this quartet style of singing. With no knowledge of how to sing parts they attempted this new found joy of theirs, and boy was it funny. I will never forget the first song they tried to sing. It was “The Blood Washed Band” by those same Cathedrals. They obviously did not have a clue as to what they were doing, but looking past the mistakes you could see the interest and potential. Therefore, I decided to step in and help them. From that day until now, a lot of progress has been made, and the boys have become better at singing than me.
For us it was a joy to be invited to sing at the 6th Annual Gospel Music Fan Festival. We appreciate the Unthanks for hosting such a wonderful event. Singing at the Fan Festival showed we’re not ready for prime time, but it was a wonderful experience and we enjoyed every minute of it. We were humbled to be on the same stage with such prestige artists as Gold City, Booth Brothers, The Talley’s, Jimmy Fortune and others. It was good to learn from some of the best in the business, and we look forward to using that acquired knowledge to make more progress in singing and ministering to those that the Lord has placed in our path.

Mercy’s Mark - Sep 05

We feel so blessed to have made so many new friends in our first year. Thank you, for all the words of encouragement and support. We know that so many of you have prayed for God to bless our ministry and He truly has and continues to do so.
We are so excited about what the future holds for us. We have a new Daywind album releasing in October and it is going to be great! During the song selection of this album, we found ourselves searching for material that spoke to our hearts and we believe that we have accomplished what we set out to achieve. We are not sure what the album name is going to be yet, but we will keep you all posted.
We're also excited about convention coming up in September. We are looking forward to seeing all our friends and spending time with you all. Be sure to catch us on the main stage on Friday night at 6:15 pm. This year we were fortunate to have been nominated for the Horizon Group and want to thank everyone that voted for us.
Please stop by our website and keep up with us. We look forward to seeing you all at a nearby concert soon!
God Bless,
Mercy's Mark

The Quicks - Sep 05

I have loved this music for as long as I can remember! There were two singings each year, promoted by Mr. Byron Branson in Bradford, Tennessee where I grew up. (Bradford is the home of Johnny Cook, who sang with the Happy Goodmans.) I remember when I was a kid trying to sneak and watch the Gospel Jubilee on Sunday mornings. I had to sneak because I was supposed to be getting ready for church! Mother would always stop to listen to the Inspirations, but she would send me scrambling if I slowed down for anyone else - and I could NOT resist The Happy Goodmans! I would hide in the doorway of the living room (back when that was possible), because you couldn’t just “LISTEN” to the Happy Goodmans! You had to witness them singing! They didn’t just stand there and sing like the people in my church – they had something different and I just had to see it! These two groups are as different as it gets – and thank God for the work each has done - they have both been pillars of the industry! On one hand, you have a male quartet with matching suits and on the other, a group who finished as a mixed trio. That sounds really different until you hear of the One they are singing about! That’s what you will find at the National Quartet Convention! Male quartets, mixed groups, preaching, showcases each afternoon - with one common denominator… they will all be telling about Jesus Christ – each in their own way. “For I determine not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.” I Corinthians 2:2
If you are able to attend NQC 2005, The Quicks hope you will stop by Booth #422 for a “quick” visit! We would love to meet you! (Tim will be the one in the aisle stopping everyone to talk!) We will also have a free gift for each of you who stop by and mention seeing The Quick’s article for this month on SoGospelNews.com!
Be listening for our latest single, “Now I Know” released through the Rick Hendrix Company. We believe the message in this song can impact listeners through radio as it has in concert!

Embrace - “Walk His Way”

Embrace is a ministry committed to Christ and family, greatly desiring to serve the Lord in our private as well as our public lives. Melinda and husband, Paul have two children--Baleigh, who is nine and McKayla, who is eight. Marci and her husband, John have one son--Kirkland, an active and charming two-year-old! Dane and his wife, Nora (that would be me) also have two children--Carrie, who is eight and Stephen, a seven-year-old 200% boy. The children are all home-schooled at this time and travel with us as much as possible. They serve beside their parents like the little soldiers of the Cross that they are. We travel on a 1982 MCI bus lovingly called “ Ruby” and when all eleven of us are in tow, it’s been said we resemble the Darlin’s of Andy Griffith fame, pullin’ into town. Paul, affectionately known as the “Bald Headed Bus Driver” is at the wheel.
God has given each member of the Embrace team responsibilities. The Lord is most certainly an equal opportunity employer and when the bus stops everyone does their part. Our children, known as The Mustard Seed Moving Company, are becoming increasingly adept at carrying equipment, helping with set-up, and whatever else it takes to prepare to minister. Even little Kirkland can carry a mic stand to it’s proper place. It gives us great joy as we watch our children learn to serve the Savior. We each consider it a great privilege to serve our Lord Christ.
The Embrace ministry was founded on the deepest conviction that God has a purpose and a plan for each life and that our particular mission is to tell the lost about the Savior and to encourage believers in their walk with the Lord. Our earnest desire, our ongoing prayer, is that when we enter a place to minister and worship that those who are there with us will leave changed, not by Embrace but by the power of the Living God at work in us and through us. Our highest calling is to “Walk His Way“!

When Life Takes a Turn

About 5 years ago, we were enjoying life with 4 healthy kids...We were just beginning the ministry of Hope's Call. Our kids were enjoying life and friends. Everything seemed to be going along just fine. Then a series of events turned into a major life turn for our family. The first turn came with heart wrenching news that deeply affected our son, Josh, who was 10 at the time. His very best friend in the whole world, Gregory Price, went home to be with the Lord suddenly, as a result of a rare auto immune disease with a very long name. His parents were amazing. Through the dramatic turn they were experiencing, they gave God all the glory for the years they were blessed to have Greg. They thanked God for his friends and his life. They were the most amazing example to our family. They showed us that although life can dramatically turn, and tremendous hurt can come, God NEVER turns away. He is there. He is faithful. He is a comforter. He is HOPE. They lived out GRACE right before our eyes.
Little did I know how soon I would need to see and find strength from their example. Just 2 weeks after Greg's death life took a turn for us personally...At first, it seemed like it would be a small curve in the road, but soon we realized, it was a major turn in a direction we never could have imagined it going. We found ourselves in a hospital emergency room with son, Josh (remember, this was his best friend that had died). He couldn't walk, he had a fever, and he was covered with a strange rash. We were mind boggled. We were told that Joshua had a very rare auto immune disease (It was oddly similar to Greg's, yet they said these things are not contagious). It had a similar and equally long name. Over the coming months, we would learn much about this disease. Doctor's warned us that it had certain risks, but they said they felt confident these things would not happen to Joshua. Well each one, one at a time, sometimes two at a time did happen to Josh. He became very sick and his illness became life threatening. LIFE had taken a dramatic turn. It would never be completely the same. Joshua was in aggressive kidney failure. The doctor's were working tirelessly to try to stop the kidneys from failing. It is a very long story and Joshua went through so much...But through it all he possessed this amazing peacefulness that was contagious. God's grace was all over him. I had my good moments and weak moments, as did my husband and our family, but God remained constant in His faithfulness and love. I remember one of my weak moments was when Josh said to me, "Mom, maybe Greg missed me and he asked God if I could come to heaven to play." Oh, what a moment. One time, Josh made me laugh and cry at the same time. He wrote a song called God does Miracles. It said:
God does miracles I know this is true.
God does miracles, This I am telling you.
If you trust in the Lord, He'll be there all the way.
That's what I am going around singing to say!
That blessed me so much. To read his hope and his conviction that once God healed him, he knew he had to share it! WOW! Tears! The same song also made me laugh. Here is a classic line from one of the verses:
I'm just another kid who got a disease. At least I didn't get rabies.
Oh gracious, how I laughed! And how I needed to.
I cannot tell you the countless prayers, cards, emails, posters, games, and visits that Joshua received. All the time, God was just working through people to help lift all of us up. And all the time, I was reminded of the grace and strength of Greg's family and they lost their son. I still had mine. I had so much to be thankful for.
Joshua began to stabilize after about one year. The illness with the long name was gone, but he was left with kidney damage that doctors expected to lead to eventual kidney failure over a longer period of time. He continued on medications and close monitoring for about 2 years. Then because of his amazing progress, he was removed from all medication and just continued with close observational check ups. Well, about 1 and 1/2 years ago and 3 and 1/2 years after the illness began, his doctors at Children's Hospital shared their amazement with me about how well Joshua was doing. They knew we were moving to TN and had to have his records transferred and follow up care here. In my final conversation with his main doctor, Dr. Mattoo, the words of this man were...."Mrs. Beauvais, I never expected Joshua would do this well. He may be observed closely by his regular physician, but he does not need on-going care at Vanderbilt, unless a problem arises." Guess who did that .....GOD! This was another turn, but it was a good turn! Praise God! I love it when God stumps the doctors!
No doctor will promise us that Joshua's health problems are over, but GOD has promised us that He would go through every single one with us FAITHFULLY. He is an AWESOME God and I cannot imagine weathering any storm without HIM. I truly believe that Joshua is HEALED. But I know no matter what each of us may face....God walks with us. I believe that He wades through the water with those devastated people on the gulf coast. I believe He rides up into the helicopter with His children that are in those baskets. I am thankful that He gently closes their eyes for a few minutes of rest when they are weary and I believe He wraps His loving arms around them when they face the loss of life and possessions. Life surely takes turns, but GOD never turns away! He is a loving and merciful GOD. Let's pray about what we can do to be His hands and His feet during this tremendous time of need. I will never forget all the people He used to surround us with HIS love. And I will never forget the quiet nights in the hospital room, as Josh slept, when He would just embrace me with His presence and remind me that our family was not alone.
Let's commit to praying everyday that the people of the gulf coast will call out to a GOD who hears, look to a God who sees, and reach to a God who stretches HIS loving arms out to receive all who call on the name of the SAVIOR.
With Love and Prayers,
Donna

The Talleys - Sep 05

The Talley Trio just returned from a great weekend in New York City, ending with an unforgettable Sunday at the Brooklyn Tabernacle. We spent three days in the city shopping, sightseeing and attending Broadway shows, but Sunday's two services were the highlights of the week. Pastor Jim Cymbala and everyone at the Tab treated us royally, and their giving, serving spirit is evident even before entering the building. We especially appreciated Bertille, Zoe, Noreen, and Vanessa, who were our hostesses all day, (hi girls) fetching bottled water, selling product, and making sure nobody got lost. One of my favorite parts of the trip was ending our hour-long set with "I Love The Lord/Total Praise" and hearing the incredible choir sound a thunderous "Amen!" along with us at the end of the song, after which 10-12 people announced their decisions for Christ.
As soon as we got home, we had to begin work on a special new Talley project. "Anthology" will feature the Talley Trio's best loved songs, as well as three new tunes about which I'm very excited. It should be released very soon, so keep your eyes open.
If you'll be attending the National Quartet Convention this year, make sure you're in your seat at 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday and 8:30 p.m. on Friday, because that's when the Talleys take the stage. I'll also be part of a special event on Saturday afternoon called "The Leaders of Tomorrow." You will see me and approximately 100 other artists on stage, all under age 30. Various combinations of performers will sing some classic songs that you're familiar with, and a few that are brand new. If you get the chance, come by the Talley booth sometime during the week and say hi.
I'd like to share with you a story which took place a few weeks ago. After a concert in Illinois (with the most energetic audience I've seen in a while), I headed backstage to grab some food after packing up the product. On the way, I heard a voice call out, "Lauren! Telephone!" I took the call (albeit a bit hesitantly), and a soft female voice on the other end said that she had been at the concert that night with her grandparents. Long story short, she said that at 20 years old, she felt lost and hopeless, and that her life no longer mattered. She had originally planned to take her own life after she got home from the concert, but changed her mind when she heard our songs and testimonies. She rededicated her life to Christ that night, and said she knew then that God had a plan for her, and it was worth sticking around for. After I picked myself up off the floor, I managed to talk with her a few minutes more and hung up the phone.
There really is so much more to this thing called gospel music than a flawless presentation designed to inspire someone to evaluate his or her life. I don't tell you this story to show you how great my performance was that night, or how poignant and eloquent the testimony; our best efforts and formulas for success are rarely the things that truly make a difference to people. I never know exactly who is in the seats in front of me when I sing; I rarely hear their stories. I just hope at the end of the night that something we sang or said mattered to someone.
That young girl said that we encouraged her that night, but she really encouraged us. As someone I shared the story with said, "That'll make you get on the bus every week."
I'm getting on the bus tomorrow afternoon. Wonder what He will do....
Until next time,
Lauren Talley

The Quicks - Aug 05

The Steve Hurst School of Music, which was held July 10-16, was the most awesome week for The Quicks! Tim took a week off from his job at Vanderbilt so the four of us could attend the school as a group. Tim and I commuted through that crazy Nashville traffic each day while Rachel and Rebecca stayed on campus at Trevecca. I don’t EVEN want to know how they spent their time! Maybe they ate three square meals a day, studied their lessons, and went to bed early…
Our family was honored to be a part of the taping for the pilot to a new Gospel Music television show called “Gospel Music at the River!” We sang our radio single, “He Can Move the Water” to a full house at River of Life Church in Smyrna, Tennessee, the location of the filming for the new program. Pastor Johnny Minick, who was with the Happy Goodmans for 30 years, is the driving force behind this new TV show. The lineup for the program included Johnny Minick, the Daryl Williams Trio, Country Music legend George Jones, Comedian Aaron Wilburn, River of Life Choir, Nashville Star winner George Canyon, John and Angie Prim, and many more! We all had so much fun – Tim introduced himself to everyone there, Rachel spent the whole time with Aaron Rich of the Daryl Williams trio, Rebecca was happy to see the event was catered, and I was glad that Garnett finished my makeup just as our family was called on stage!
Our current radio single, “He Can Move the Water,” moved up to #65 on the Singing News Chart for August – We’re so excited! “He Can Move the Water” can be found on the Rick Hendrix Radio Comp #31, Cut #3! If your station needs a copy, contact the Rick Hendrix Company at (615) 662-4848 or .
Be listening for our next single coming to a station near you!

The Bilderbacks

Formed in 1978, The Bilderbacks were the musical part of the evangelistic team headed by their father, Calvin Bilderback who pastured the Oak Grove Full Gospel Church in Springdale, AR for 23 years.
The group as it exists today consists of husband and wife Euel and Marsha Bilderback and sister Kim. In 1997 the group felt the leading of God to take their unique brand of music ministry to a broader audience.
Since this time the group has had many successes including several Singing News Top 80 songs including their latest single “Heart of Flesh” from their Gospel Heritage Recording, “Unbelievable!” This inspiring new single makes it’s debut in August’s Singing News Charts in the Mid 60’s, and features group member Marsha.
The Bilderbacks are also blessed with much original material including their previous popular single, “Unbelievable,” written by group leader, Euel Bilderback.
In 2001 the ministry of the Bilderbacks turned another corner, when Euel accepted the pastorate vacated by his ailing father, Calvin. Euel shares, “Working with my Dad during his 23 year ministry, I have seen God move so powerfully in different situations. When I accepted the pastorate at the Mercy and Grace Cathedral, I really didn’t know if God was closing the door for the traveling ministry of the Bilderbacks.” He continues, “God couldn’t have given us a better family at the church. We have a wonderful pastoral staff that allows us to continue to travel and share our mininstry.”
Over the years the demand for this awesome trio has continued to increase. Last year the group logged in over 100 events, and is slated to see a 15% increase according to this years schedule. In addition to church events they are also seeing a solid increase of concert events, in fact they just got back from headlining the Blue Springs Valley Sing that’s annually held in Cleveland, TN.

Life is Like a Box of What?

OK...SoGospelNews graciously invited me to be interviewed for a feature for this month's website articles! I was so happy and honored to be a part of it....I had alot of fun and got to think alot. Here is the interesting conclusion I have come to. Forrest Gump said "Life is Like A Box of Chocolates." I say...Ok Forrest, but more than that..."Life is really like a box of cereal!"
That's right...cereal! It can be so many different kinds depending on the day, depending on the week! I mean sometimes it is Honey NUT cheerios...Just crazy, but FUN! Sometimes it is like Muesli...completely foreign...like "what does that mean and why?" LOL! Sometimes it is like Corn Flakes....Full of corniness and/or flaky people (for me that is most often myself)! Some days it is just like Golden Grahams! Those are the best days...The days when God sends loving messages as He always does and we actually listen! I wonder how many days I choose to hear the sweet and patient voice of my Savior or how many days I grab the junk cereal instead. I need strength from God and I choose "Fruity Pebbles" instead of the Solid
Rock! WOW...I want to be yielding to the good food my Lord would have me to consume each day...His tender mercies, His goodness, His voice of wisdom, and so much more!
Ps 119:16 says- I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word. I know the first ingredient in my morning needs to be His precious Word and our sweet and intimate conversation. So what are we all filling up on each day? I am going to try and ask myself that question often. Anyway, this is just some "food" for thought and the PUN was COMPLETELY INTENDED...LOL!
Ok...Now it is your turn...just for fun...describe your day using a cereal brand in the comments section...Ready, Set, GO!
Blessings!
