Christian Davis’ Grandmother Passes Away
A Note from Mercy's Mark:There are times in our lives when we are stopped in our path and need to reach out to those around us. This week has been one of those times. Many times we share only the good things with you that are happening with Mercy's Mark. But as fellow believers we feel it is important to share the needs that we have as well. There are few items we are requesting that you add to your prayer list today.
Yesterday, we received the sad news that Christian Davis' grandmother had went on to be with the Lord. Here is an excerpt written by Michael Davis (Christian's father):
"This morning at 12:01am, the Lord welcomed home another Saint, my precious Mother, Thelma Grace Davis Haught. She lived an exemplary life and was known as a prayer warrior with a servant's heart for almost 97 years. She was never selfish with her requests of anyone. Her one desire for herself was to die in her sleep. Praise God he granted her request!!"
What a wonderful example she has been. Please add Christian, his parents Michael and Martha, sister Rachel and their entire family to your prayer list. They will be traveling to Gadsden, Alabama for the services.

Jordan River Changes Name
(Arab, AL) Recently Bluegrass Gospel artist Jordan River signed a recording contract with Song Garden Music Group only to find out a few days thereafter that a name change would be in their future. After the signing was publicized, a Nashville area resident contacted Song Garden claiming pre-emptive rights to the name, Jordan River. Obviously this came as a surprise to the group from Alabama. Group spokesman Tim Maze said, “when we first began playing we never expected to attract the attention of a nationally recognized recording company much less a trademark for our name. We regret the issue has waited until now to come up but we have moved forward under a new name for our group.”Beginning with the release of their new Song Garden project “Side by Side”, the artist formerly known as Jordan River will now be Canaan’s Crossing. For more information visit http://www.canaanscrossing.com . Canaan’s Crossing new radio release, “In your own time”, can be heard on your favorite gospel radio station.
2006 National Quartet Convention Overwhelming Success
Louisville, KY - Throughout the past six and a half days, including Sunday evening’s bonus concert, Louisville’s Kentucky Fair & Expo Center has provided the perfect setting for a Southern Gospel Music lover’s paradise. Soloists, duets, trios and, of course, quartets, have provided fans from across the US, Canada and several foreign countries with exactly what they expected from the National Quartet Convention - great music and more great music. The question of the week, however, seemed to be - “how can I be in two places at one time? There’s too much great music.” This was the comment as one excited radio station representative from the state of North Carolina commented as he scanned the long list of NQC events.Certainly no one attending this year’s National Quartet Convention can say there was a shortage of things to do. Gospel music lovers from across the nation, as well as several foreign countries began to arrive early on Monday morning (September 11) for the 49th Annual National Quartet Convention. In fact, even before the first musical notes rang out at the 2006 National Quartet Convention, fans were lining up to register for tickets for the 2007 event. “This is hopefully a good indication of what the future holds for the National Quartet Convention,” stated Clarke Beasley, Executive Vice President of the National Quartet Convention, as he watched his fine staff assist fans who were purchasing tickets for next year’s event.
The annual event, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2007, transformed the Kentucky Fair & Expo Center’s Freedom Hall and South Wing into a Gospel music lover’s paradise each year during the second week of September. Over 40,000 people attend the event annually, representing 40 states and a half dozen countries, including Norway, Ireland and Canada, making the NQC Christian music’s largest marketplace and largest annual event. According to the Greater Louisville Convention & Visitors Bureau, the NQC generates more than an 11 million dollar economic impact for its host city of Louisville.
Attendees of this year’s Convention encountered considerable changes as a result of the renovations at the Expo Center. The Exhibit Hall, which features over 450 exhibitors, was moved from its long-time residence in the East Hall to the South Wing, leaving attendees and exhibitors roaming around trying to locate everything from the food court to the tunnel to Freedom Hall; however, Beasley says overall everyone has adjusted well. “We’ve made a very major effort to try to make this transitional period as smooth as possible, and even though we were forced to move our exhibitors into a different location, our exhibitor sales were up. We had more exhibitors than in past years, and many of those exhibitors experienced increased sales. Although we are encountering some growing pains for a brief period, we know the end result will be very positive for our event when all the renovations are complete.”
The 49th Annual National Quartet Convention concluded this evening (Saturday) as the final concert was held in Freedom Hall, with 17 of Southern Gospel Music’s top artists on stage between 6:00pm and midnight, providing the perfect conclusion to an exciting week. “Overall, the week has proven to be a great success,” Beasley stated. “With evening concert attendance holding steady, booth sales increasing, afternoon showcase tickets dramatically increasing and significant involvement from the church community in all of our activities, we feel we have the NQC pointed in a very positive direction for the future.”
As the 2006 event concludes, thoughts immediately turn toward the 2007 event, which will take place September 10 - 15. “We have some exciting things already being planned in celebration of our 50th anniversary. We have already again scheduled the Sunday evening bonus concert to kick off the 2007 event, and there will be many special surprises that we will be announcing throughout the year.

The NQC & CMP Team With MidAmerica Productions
MidAmerica Productions at Carnegie Hall Conductor-in-Residence, Eric Dale Knapp flew into Louisville, KY, where the 49th Annual National Quartet Convention was being held September 11-16, specifically to attend the press conference to announce plans for the event. “As Music Director of this event,” Knapp stated, “I am honored to lead a choir made up of 350 voices, invited from throughout the United States, with symphonic orchestra and professional soloists. Distinguished choirs from some of America’s leading churches will be invited to participate in this program, which involves a five-day/four-night residency in New York City.” Knapp, who is a former church music director, stated that he believes there has never been a time more important than now for a project such as this. “We have tremendous opportunity and mission within the American Gospel Music Festival. Music often communicates to people what words alone cannot.”
In MidAmerica’s 22-year history, they have presented some 700 concerts in New York, with nearly 350 in the famed Carnegie Hall, and dozens in the historic Lincoln Center. More than 2100 musical groups have appeared at various events presented by MidAmerica. “Our purpose is to highlight the appearance of distinguished artists and groups in important venues, and we are delighted to collaborate with Christian Music Presenters on the American Gospel Music Festival at Carnegie Hall.”
The American Gospel Music Festival will feature artists who have received the American Gospel Music certification, which is a franchise owned and operated by the National Quartet Convention, Inc, who has licensed Christian Music Presenters, Inc to administrate the certification criteria to prospective artists. “A part of our calling and mission at CMP,” Dr Randall Bayne, CMP’s CEO, stated at the press conference, “is to seek out and establish alliance relationships that can enlarge the exposure base of all genres of Christian music and especially Southern Gospel, which is personally dear to our hearts. CMP has been working diligently with the NQC Board to open the horizon in a substantial way. In light of specific market research, CMP has concluded that our style of music has an open field for ministry exposure.”
“We are very optimistic,” Clarke Beasley, NQC Executive Vice President, stated, “about the potential this partnership will yield. We believe it will open tremendous doors for our artists and our industry, as a whole.”

James Hales of SouthernGospelNews.com said, “Only on rare occasions have there been artists that with each recording, it’s like listening to them for the first time; such is the case with the Dunaways. I remember the feeling I felt when I heard their music for the first time. It was their ‘Beautiful Day’ recording, and I remember the giddy feeling I felt when I realized I was listening to something unique and awesome. Well, I got that same feeling when I started listening to ‘Revival.’ I had unreasonably high expectations for the Dunaways with this recording, because they have set a very high standard for themselves in my book with their previous releases, and this recording surpassed them all.”
Revival received a five star review from SouthernGospelNews.com. The album's first single, "Praise the Lord", is now being played all over the United States at Southern Gospel radio.

He soon met a high school teacher who was also a novice songwriter and pianist named Bill Gaither. They began traveling together on the weekends with Oldham singing the new songs written by Gaither. Among the thousands of songs that Oldham has sung, he was the very first person to sing and record Gaither’s infamous “He Touched Me,” a song which was recorded famously by fellow Hall of Famer Elvis Presley. The Dove Award-winning artist has recorded more than 65 albums and performed for national and international dignitaries including former presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, as well as Prince Phillip and the Queen of England. In 1971 The Hinsons opened for The Happy Goodman Family, introducing a song "The Lighthouse,” written by Ronny that soon became the Hinson’s signature song. “The Lighthouse” was also recorded by many other artists, including The Happy Goodman Family. The song went on to win numerous awards, including being named Song of the Year at the 4th Annual Dove Awards in 1972. Ron and his brothers Kenny and Larry were recognized as some of the top writers in the industry and some of their other well known songs included “He Pilots My Ship,” “Two Winning Hands, ” “Touch of the Master's Strong Hand, ” “Mercy Built A Bridge, ” and “I'll Never Be Over the Hill. ” The Hinsons stopped performing together after more than three decades in May 1988 to pursue individual careers and ministries. The original members of The Hinsons performed together one last time in 1995 at the funeral of Kenny, who died of cancer at age 41.
John T. Benson III’s contributions to the music business began in the 1970s, but his family’s legacy preceded him and in many ways predicted his own destiny. Benson’s grandfather, John T., founded The Benson Publishing Company in 1902 to primarily publish hymnbooks. John T. Jr. followed as president of the publishing company after the senior Benson’s death in 1931 and with another son, Bob, founded the Heartwarming Label in 1960 as a record company that would help to popularize the Benson Company’s existing copyrights and to develop new songwriters. Benson III, after a successful career in the family’s other business, a commercial printing company, joined his brother Bob in 1969, first as vice president and later as president, and with his brother, served the company during its most flourishing years when the Jesus Movement brought new attention and success to contemporary Christian music. Benson III also played a key role in leading the gospel music industry as a member of the GMA Board of Directors, serving as treasure and a two-year term as president of the GMA in 1978-80, during which time; the GMA established its now annual GMA Music Week convention. Benson has been married to his wife Jane for nearly 60 years and has four children, six grandchildren and one great grandchild. They still live in the Nashville area.

2006 National Quartet Convention Off To A Great Start
Louisville, KY - Gospel music lovers from across the nation, as well as several foreign countries began to arrive early on Monday morning (September 11) for the 49th Annual National Quartet Convention. In fact, even before the first musical notes rang out at the 2006 National Quartet Convention, fans were lining up to register for tickets for the 2007 event. “This is hopefully a good indication of what the future holds for the National Quartet Convention,” stated Clarke Beasley, Executive Vice President of the National Quartet Convention as he watched his fine staff assist fans who were purchasing tickets for next year’s event.Beasley, as well as other NQC Board members were also happy to learn when the ticket count was complete for Monday evening’s concert in Freedom Hall, walk-up sales were 30% above last year’s figures. “We were thrilled to see that response.” Beasley also indicated that Tuesday night’s attendance surpassed even Monday night’s attendance. “Given the weather in Louisville today, we are very pleased with Tuesday attendance and anticipate attendance to increase throughout the week.
The first ever Sunday Night Bonus Concert, which took place in the South Wing on September 10 also proved to be a great success. Fans who arrived on Sunday were treated to a concert featuring Brian Free & Assurance and Triumphant. “We were very pleased with the attendance for Sunday’s event. I think the fans thoroughly enjoyed this newly added event,” Beasley commented.
Attendees of this year’s Convention have encountered considerable changes as a result of the renovations at the Expo Center. The Exhibit Hall, which features over 450 exhibitors, including recording artists, record labels, booking agencies, music distributors, radio and television networks, was moved from its long-time residence in the East Hall to the South Wing, leaving attendees and exhibitors roaming around trying to locate everything from the food court to the tunnel to Freedom Hall; however, Beasley says overall everyone has adjusted well. “We’ve made a very major effort to try to make this transitional period as smooth as possible. These are growing pains that must be encountered for a brief period, but the end result will be very positive for our event when all the renovations are complete.”
In the meantime, the estimated 40,000 people who will attend this year’s Convention are certainly not going to let a little rain and a few construction barriers dampen their spirits. As the joyous melodies rang throughout the Expo Center on Monday and Tuesday, cares were forgotten, at least for one week!
The 2006 National Quartet Convention continues throughout the remainder of the week with Bible study and Chapel services, musical showcases and concerts taking place each day from 9:30am until midnight throughout the grounds of the KFEC. Tickets for evening concerts are still available and may be purchased at any TicketMaster location, online at http://www.natqc.com or at the Freedom Hall Box Office. A complete schedule of events may also be obtained online at wwwnatqc.com. The 49th Annual NQC will conclude on Saturday evening, September 16.

John Bowman Comes Off the Road, Issacs Record With Grammy Award Winner Mark Bright

Nashville, TN - It’s been an extremely busy summer for popular bluegrass Gospel recording artist, The Isaacs. In addition to performing more than 40 concerts within a three month period, the group has spent every spare moment working on their new recording. The project, slated for an early Spring of 2007 release, is being produced by Grammy Award winning producer, Mark Bright. Bright has produced recordings for such popular artists as Rascal Flatts, Carrie Underwood Sara Evans, Jo Dee Messina, Blackhawk and Lonestar, just to name a few. His diverse work with these popular performers has spawned multi-platinum record sales, in addition to multiple Number One singles, and more than a dozen Top Ten hits. “It was truly a thrill for us to work with someone as creative as Mark,” states group member Sonya Isaacs. “He has brought so much to this recording, and we can’t wait for everyone to be able to hear the end result.”
In addition to tour dates and recording sessions, The Isaacs have been in rehearsals with their newly added banjo player/guitarist Kevin Haynie, who made his debut with the group on Labor Day weekend. Kevin fills the spot recently vacated by long-time Isaacs member, John Bowman, who is also the husband of Rebecca Isaacs Bowman. John recently made the decision to retire from the road and accept a full-time teaching position with a private Christian school in the couple’s hometown of LaFollette, TN. “This is an incredible opportunity for John, and we are all totally supportive of his decision,” states his wife, Rebecca. “Our children, Levi and Jakobi, will be able to stay at home more, lead a somewhat normal life and attend school on a full-time basis. It was a difficult decision for us to make because we have never been apart from each other. As long as John and I have been married, we have been together every day, and after each of our children were born, they came on the road with us, as well. Obviously, this will be a major adjustment, but we know it was the right decision to make for our family.”
No doubt, Bowman, who has been an integral part of the musical ministry of The Isaacs for more than a decade, will be missed; however, as group member Ben Isaacs conveys, The Isaacs’ excitement about the addition of the very talented Kevin Haynie. “He is an awesome and extremely accomplished musician. Kevin’s brother, Aubrey, played fiddle and traveled with our group a year or so ago, so we have known his family for quite a while. I think everyone is really going to enjoy hearing Kevin and getting to know him.”
Complete information regarding how to order the new Isaacs’ recording will soon be available on-line at http://www.theisaacs.com. Be sure to check out the group’s website to obtain the most up-to-date information on The Isaacs, including a complete tour schedule.

On September 9, 2006, Vernon succumbed to the disease of cancer that wracked his body for over eight years. But it did not slow him down. During his last months he found time to travel in and around Atlanta, Georgia.
