Luke 12:16-21
16. And he told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop.
17.He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.'
18."Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.
19.And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." '
20."But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?'
21."This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God."
Did you notice number of times the "rich fool," as he is known in the Bible, says the words "I," "my," and "myself"? This story is a sad portrayal of a self-centered man, trying to make it on his own and securing his own future, thinking only of himself. He thinks he can secure his future without help from anyone….he doesn't even think he needs help from God. In verse 20, God immediately calls the rich man a fool! God let him know that his vision was shallow and selfish. This was a man filled with pride and who would have nothing at the end of his life- except a pile of grain.
The message for us is that when we take our own path, pursue our own happiness and initiate actions with no thought of God or the consequences of our actions, we are behaving like fools. How many times do we say things and behave in ways that are selfish and short-sighted? The Lord has a plan for your life. He knows your strengths and your weaknesses and has planned your perfect path. You can trust Him to provide the direction you need. Surely you want more at the end of your life than material things. The rich fool was willing to be selfish and prideful and sacrifice his relationship with God and others. What are you sacrificing with the choices you make? Life is short and eternity is long…make the choices that you can live with!
