Q: Introduce the current trio. Tell us a bit about each member of the group. Who sings which part?
A: The current group consists of Brad Strider on tenor. He’s from Greensboro, NC and is the owner/founder of the group. Greg Gainer sings baritone and has been part of the group since 2005, so he is a veteran. Greg is from Lancaster, SC and also plays great piano (which we try to incorporate into our concerts). Kyle King from Princess Anne, MD is the newest member. He’s been part of the group almost a year and sings lead. He is also the youngest member at 22.
Q: Where did the name Mercy’s Well come from? Does it have anything to do with Indiana Jones or the Well of Souls?
A: We were working on an album at the time, and we were pitched a song called “Mercy’s Well”. We loved it and it stuck! Although I love Indiana Jones, it didn’t have anything to do with the Well of Souls...nor is it Mercy Swell or Mercy Well or Mercy Wells or The Mercy Well Singers. We have been called all those. It’s simple...Mercy’s Well.
Q: Have you ever been confused for other “Mercy” groups like Mercy’s Mark or MercyMe?
A: In name, yes. Although we have been around longer than Mercy’s Way and Mercy’s Mark, we did get that confusion. The only “Mercy” group older than us in MercyMe. When they had a bus wreck a few years back, we had people call the office and send us text message saying they were praying for us! We appreciated those prayers, but it WAS a case of mistaken identity.
Q: Who’s the most serious guy in the group?
A: Kyle! Without a doubt. He is the youngest member of the group, but his nickname is Pawpaw. He’s the first one in the bed, the first one up in the mornings. He’s also the person most likely to be serious. The rest of us are idiots. HA.
Q: Who’s the flashiest dresser?
A: Brad. Period.
Q: Who has the weirdest hobbies?
A: Probably Greg. He loves to tinker with stuff. He repairs vacuum cleaners and other items and resells them on eBay and Craigslist. He does well with that.
Q: Who’s married? Who’s single?
A: Everyone is single.
Q: When the Mercy’s Well movie is made, which famous actors should play each of you?
A: Wow. Interesting question. I would say Mark Ruffalo could pull off Brad. Maybe John C. Reilly. Kyle would probably be played by Shia LeBeouf if he would grow some facial hair for the part. Greg could be played by Matt Damon maybe. I dunno.
While on the road, we hear we look like David Phelps (Brad), Brad Paisley (Kyle), and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (Greg). None of those are actors though!
Q: The Blackwood Brothers or the Statesmen?
A: Statesmen
Q: The Goodmans or the Hinsons?
A: Goodmans.
Q: Mac or PC?
A: MAC!!! (Brad.)
Q: Carnegie Hall or Grand Ole Opry?
A: Both. Of course.
Q: Tell us about the newest CD and single?
A: The new CD is so great! We are proud beyond description. Every song is a single and has so much diversity on it. Everything from pop country to amazing ballads to straight-ahead southern to blended church worship sounds.
The first single is a great 6/8 ballad called “The Power”. It was written by Twila Labar and Joel Lindsey...the same writers of “Orphans of God”. It’s just a great song of victory. The first line of the chorus is “That same power that raised Him up from the grave, still rolls away stones that stand in your way.” Wow, what a thought!
Q: What is your vision for Mercy’s Well?
A: To be right where God wants us to be. We have seen steady growth over the past 4 years, even when the economy hasn’t been doing well! We have tried our best to be faithful, to work with churches through tough times, and God has blessed that! I hope that Mercy’s Well will be a name that is always associated with class and professionalism. There are no “superstar” vocalists here. But there are good vocalists that focus on harmony, blend, and just loving people through good times and bad.
Q: What can people expect to experience at a Mercy’s Well concert?
A: Variety. I have often said, if you don’t like what we are doing, wait 5 minutes and it will change. We have sometimes been labeled as a more progressive sound in Southern Gospel and we are proud of that! But, we are equally proud and known for our Hymns series. Songs like “It Is Well With My Soul”, “God Put A Rainbow In The Cloud”, and “Nothing But The Blood (Still Saves The Lost)” have a permanent place in our programs because people love the variety we do. It has also allowed us to minister in churches where Southern Gospel is not all that accepted. That’s exciting! When you attend a Mercy’s Well concert, you will laugh, cry, rejoice...and most of all, we hope we can turn all the focus to Christ! He’s the one that can truly change lives. We are just the instrument.
Q: You evolved from a duet to a trio. Will you ever evolve into a quartet? If so, will you listen to my bass-singer demo?
A: Ummm. No. Period.
