The Bowling Family: 11 Months and Counting…

As a child I remember asking my Mom “why?” when she would ask or tell me to do something. Whether it was cleaning my room or not running around barefoot outside. Now that I am older, I realize she had good reason. I think sometimes we all get this way toward God, asking Daddy God “why didn’t I get that raise,” or “why did I have to go through that trial?” We all know we shouldn’t question Him, but it sure is cool when He gives us the answer anyhow. This month I got to sit down with The Bowling Family and hear their amazing testimony of this past year.

As the first anniversary fast approaches, it is hard to forget what happened on Thursday, July 1st, 2010. It was on all the television networks, Facebook updates, radio station reports and interviews, and of course the “tweets” were all in full force, that day. When the news broke that they had been in a horrific bus crash, I believe all of us were numb for a bit. Most of us were just fans of The Bowling Family and didn’t have a clue what was in store for them. But there is one who through it all (one of my favorite songs) knew that they were going to come out of this in a way only He could make possible.

Since last year Mike and Kelly Bowling alongside Terah Crabb Penhollow have had some awesome opportunities to spread the word of God like never before. From their miraculous recoveries to their victorious testimonies, it is no wonder why God chose them to help spread His word and touch many lives that may have never known or accepted Him. Kelly said “when you’re going through this you don’t really think about it, you are only thinking I want to get better, I hope we are okay. But when we started singing and sharing the story, which was incredibly painful to talk about, you start seeing the people in the audience and start seeing that it’s helping, or touching them or hitting a nerve with them. God can use your pain for the glory and that’s what it’s all about. You don’t know why you have to walk through it sometimes, but if He can use it, then you’re kind of ok with it. You feel better knowing that it can help someone else get through something. It’s why we do what we do.”

Probably the thing that screams God’s works to me the loudest is their new DVD, Miracles & Memories. This video was recorded two weeks prior to their accident. The songs and testimonies they share were already soul stirring, but now to look back and see the path after the recording. It’s remarkable. While they were in the hospital bed recovering and not really knowing what lies ahead for them, their video was being edited. Their song that was recorded in 2008, “A Miracle Today”, which is so foretelling, is one of the featured songs on this DVD, along with “Your Cries Have Awoken the Master”, “I Still Glory in the Cross”, and many more.

The Bowlings are back in the studio finishing up their latest project which is a Hymns and Worship album. Mike talks a little bit about this, “It has songs from Unclouded Day to Jesus Messiah. It’s the songs we need and we have never done a worship album. It’s going to be a church album.” Kelly added, “We had started it before the wreck, but Mike couldn’t sing for months with a head injury so we have had to work a little slower. Still if he works too hard vocally, he gets a headache. We have had to take a slower pace to get it finished. But we’re almost there!”

They have been back on the road now for a few months and by looking at their calendar they are pretty busy. So be sure to check out http://www.bowlingsonline.com to see when they are going to be close to you. I know the event that has caught my eye is CrabbFest at Sea, which takes place January 30th to February 3rd, 2012. It is a five day reunion cruise with The Crabb Family to the Bahamas. That’s right … 5 days and 5 nights with Jason Crabb, Aaron & Amanda Crabb, Adam Crabb, and The Bowling Family.

As usual I had to ask a few fun facts just to see how Mike and Kelly really are. Of course it just made me like them even more and I am sure you will feel the same way!

Jym and I have had a lot of fun singing together … What is your favorite thing about touring together, as husband and wife?

They both laugh….Mike “That’s a hard question, give me a minute. Next question...” They both were laughing in hysterics. Even though they both cackled at the question, I can tell that there is a special bond between them both. Mike continued talking about how special it is that they get to travel together, “I think just being able to travel with your kids; most people aren’t able to travel with their family. It’s a blessing.”

What are your favorite groups?

Mike’s first response was Sunday Edition, which in no way has anything to do with the fact that Chris Unthank of Sunday Edition/Absolutely Gospel was sitting next to him. I think I saw Chris slip him a Jackson, but that’s off the record. After that I had to alter the question a bit.

What were your favorite groups growing up?

Mike took the lead saying “The Rambos, The Hinsons, The Happy Goodman Family, I was exposed to those. My grandma would play the Rambos on the radio all the time. I sang all their songs. The Hinsons and The Goodmans I watched on TV.” Kelly agreed “The Goodmans,” Mike interjected “She is a little bit younger than meeee.” Kelly continued “A little younger. I remember The Perrys, The Isaacs, and they are not much older than me, but they were already singing at like 16.”

So we are back to the original question … Why? Why did the Bowlings go through this horrible bus crash? I think we can all agree that through this tragedy God has been able to use the Bowlings in a way He may have never been able to otherwise. What the devil meant for harm, God used for His glory!
