Three Bridges
Three Bridges, a trio with an interesting sound, is making their mark on the Southern Gospel crowd. When I asked them to describe their sound, they stated that they didn't have a traditional Southern Gospel sound, but that they approach their unique sound with a fresh perspective. Their hearts are strongly embedded in Southern Gospel.
Speaking of uniqueness, they have just come off a unique hit in "I Am A Soldier". By adding a high Soprano and a very low Bass, this old spiritual took on new life. Though they were never expecting their record company, Crossroads, to release it to radio, they have experienced a ton of recognition from it. Radio has played an important part of getting Three Bridges to where they are today.
The first I had ever heard of Three Bridges was when I heard the powerful rendition of "Dear Captain," an inspiring song that puts many of us to shame for not praying for our President as we should. The President of the United States carries a heavy load on his shoulders, no matter what political party he is affiliated with, and this song clearly reminds us that we should be lifting his name in prayer every day. I can't help but think that this young trio has made an impact on our country with this song. Their current radio release "Cooling Water" shows a completely different musical side to this group, and shows that they really are very diverse in their musical style and abilities.
Three Bridges consists of Elliot McCoy, Dave McVay and Mitchell Jon Kenitzer. All three of the members reside in the Nashville, TN area with their families.
During the National Quartet Convention 2003 I was lucky enough to do a quick interview with these men and we had some fun with a few silly questions.
When asked "what was their favorite superhero as a child?", one courageous member admitted that Superman was his favorite childhood hero and he still had the cape, however his favorite superhero lunchbox was the Lone Ranger and he still owns that lunch box too.
I asked them, "what was the worst thing you got in trouble for as a kid?" One reply was climbing the chicken coupe roof and tearing the shingles off and throwing them, the shingles, not the chickens, across the yard. Apparently his dad believed in the Biblical method of parenting and wasn't into 'sparing the rod' especially for this instance.
Not naming names, in order to protect the guilty, one member confessed to breaking all the windows in his school after summer vacation let out, never thinking that they would need to use the school again. I believe that his terminology was that his dad 'wore him out' for that little stunt.
They really couldn't think of anything 'bad' that they had done in a restaurant, but they did admit to secretly ordering Jim Hamil, who happened to be eating at the same place as them, an order of buck wheat pancakes and chocolate milk. I hope they never order anything for me.
I asked them where they would like to sing that they haven't been able to go to yet, and their very first response was, because they received a personal letter of thanks from President Bush for their song "Dear Captain", they would love to sing at the White House. I certainly hope they get there.
Their recent hit, "Dear Captain" was presented to President Bush today when business executive Doyle Yager personally delivered the hit single, "Dear Captain" to the president during a business meeting. During his meeting with Yager, President Bush responded to the message of "Dear Captain" with great enthusiasm and gratitude and said that he would, "crank it up on Air Force One."
This fine young group will be performing at the SoGospelNews.com 5th Annual Convention on Thursday night, July 29th, and it will no doubt be worth your time to come out and see them do what they do so well, and that is performing Southern Gospel Music.
