image A birthday celebration was held on November 16, 2003 in honor of Homer Fry’s 75th birthday. It also marked Homer’s 55th year in gospel music. The celebration was held at his home church, Seventeenth Street Baptist, in Huntington, WV.

Homer Fry spent most of his career as the baritone of the Gospel Harmony Boys of Huntington, WV. The idea for the formation of the group was a result of Homer meeting his friend Harold Lane during their service in the military. Homer, affectionately known as “Deacon”, sang with GHB from the mid-fifties until the early eighties. He formed the Homer Fry Singers (a group that still makes selected appearances) and is currently the baritone of the Guardians, a quartet based in Portsmouth, OH.

image The birthday celebration consisted of concert featuring the Homer Fry Singers, the Guardians and an All-Star choir made up of individuals who had sung with Homer over the years. A number of presentations were made including slide show depicting some of the major events in his life.

Homer is one of the "good guys" of gospel music. Not only is he a fine Christian man but he is a fine baritone as well.

Deacon,

I was proud to stand in the spot in which you stood for several years, but I'll never be able to fill your shoes. You've been a wonderful mentor and a spiritual giant in my life. Dean and Bobby are right, you're a great Christian man and one of the best baritones ever. Happy birthday!

Homer,
Don't know how well you remember Bro. Haskell Ritchie and the Branscombs from here in Michigan, but you and the GHB's back then sparked my first love for SGM. I can still hear you singing "He Washed My Eyes With Tears" . . . . . .
BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!! It is so good to see you still giving it all you got.
