Jody Brown Indian Family - God Writes Our Story
![]() Label - Crossroads God Writes Our Story is the latest release from Jody Brown Indian Family, and what a story it has been. The group has always been a crowd favorite, however it seems that just recently the group has seen a major boost in their career. Their last release on Crossroads, Life Is Good, featured many radio hits, including the title cut "Life is Good" and "Ain't Gonna Run," not to mention the group's sought after live performances. The group's success started in part to the hefty amount of songwriting from Jody Brown's youngest daughter, Stephanie, as well as the more tight knit sounds of the band. Seeing the Jody Brown Indian Family live is a real treat, as they utilize the skills of their live instruments and amazing vocal blend well, much like the Isaacs have done throughout their career. Similarly, I feel that like the Isaacs, the Jody Brown Indian Family has yet to capture the energy and passion of their live stage performance. God Writes Our Story does a better job, yet never quite reaches that level. "On Bended Knees", "All Things Work Together for Good", and "Jump Out of the Boat" are excellent progressive numbers, similar in sound to the likes of The Martins' early works or LordSong's current country flare. Stephanie Brown's vocals continue to grow and stretch with each release, and she especially shines on the more stripped down numbers, such as the country tinged "He Is the Life" or "Nothing's Too Hard for God." Jeremy Brown's wife, Ashley, adds a unique soprano tone to the group, recalling Misty Freeman at times, with her subtle yet expressive vocals. "Learn to Be Still" and "Love" are great examples of the group being able to switch gears in order to let Ashley shine a bit. Overall, I think Jody Brown Indian Family has finally found their niche with pushing the envelope a bit more, mixing country and bluegrass with progressive sounds. There's no doubt that this release will be marked as a highlight in this group's bright career. With Stephanie's songwriting coming to the front, the group can only get more popular with age. I really enjoy the Jody Brown Family. I first saw them in person last year at the Seminole Sing and they were awesome.
The new CD is good, but I liked the previous project better. But I'll not complain.. most of the songs on this CD were written by a very very talented 16 year old girl named Stephanie Brown. She's gonna be going places someday and I'm proud for her and the whole family. I wish I had 1/2 as much talent as Stephanie.
