imageProducer: Ben Isaacs

Label: Horizon Records

The Isaacs have long been known for their unique brand of Southern Gospel Bluegrass.  This recording continues their tradition of great picking, heartfelt vocals and soul stirring messages in song.

Things get started in high gear with the Dottie Rambo classic, “HE AIN’T NEVER DONE ME NOTHIN’ BUT GOOD.”  Featuring Sonya, this song is already doing very well for the group in the charts.  This version of the song is quite far fetched from Dottie’s soulful version from her 1968 Grammy award winning album, “The Soul of Me.”

Tim Surrett turns in a fine performance on the song “WALKING DOWN THE ROAD” as well as the upbeat “WHY ARE YOU HUNGRY”.

The real triumph of this whole recording is found in the reassuring song of faith called “IT IS WELL (ELISHA’S SONG),” featuring Becky and Sonya.  This song paints an awesome picture that I can have ” peace in my despair, knowing God will hear my prayer…in His Presence I will dwell where it is well.”  Words can’t express how much this song means to me.  This song will do very well for them in the charts.

John Bowman is featured on the medium tempo “EVERGREEN SHORE” while Ben Isaacs is featured on the up-tempo “THE SUN WILL NEVER SET AGAIN,” written by Gerald Crabb.  The pace slows down for another Gerald Crabb song called “WHO WILL SURVIVE THE STORM.”  Featuring Lily, this song reminds us “if we don’t stand with Jesus, we must stand the test alone…if the blood of the Savior is not the refuge you’re under, then who will survive the storm?”

Becky turns in her usual flawless performance on “HE’S TAKING CARE OF ME”, which she wrote and would be an excellent single release.  I love it when Becky takes the lead on a song, because she takes it and makes it all her own and commands your ears and heart take notice.  A delightful reprise of this song features Levi, Becky and John’s son, singing a chorus of the song.

THERE THROUGH IT ALL” is one of two accapella songs found on this recording.  “STAR SPANGLED BANNER”, as the group performed on the Gaither Homecoming video “Let Freedom Ring,” is the second accapella number.

The lighthearted “DON’T LET YOUR LIGHT GROW DIM” makes for an enjoyable song to listen to, all the while passing along a solid message.

HE IS LEADING ME,” featuring Lily has some really sweet singing on it and also features some cool harmony.  The music and singing on this song almost has a calming affect to the listener.  Very soothing.

I was pleased to see “ANOTHER SOLDIER DOWN” included on this recording.  Written by Dee Gaskin, it is almost as if this song was written straight from Galatians chapter 6.  I have always loved the message in this song and was glad to see this song revived.

Yes, the Isaacs have done it again.  I did not think they could top their last recording, “Stand Still”, but they may have just done it with “Eye of the Storm.”  The Isaacs have become one of the most consistent groups in Southern Gospel Music.  They have remained true to their style but yet, have been quite innovative and have become trendsetters through their music.

Personal Favs: HE AIN’T NEVER DONE ME NOTHIN’ BUT GOOD; IT IS WELL (ELISHA’S SONG); THE SUN WILL NEVER SET AGAIN; WHO WILL SURVIVE THE STORM; HE’S TAKING CARE OF ME; ANOTHER SOLDIER DOWN

Rating: 4 Star Rating

Excellent project. I love every song on it. There is no other group in Bluegrass/SGM to compare them to. Lily has done her best stuff on this one. I am always amazed at the quality of their work.

WOW! What else can you say about Eye of the Storm. To have so much talent in one family is almost criminal. Every member of this bunch could hold their own as a soloist. Ben has proved himself once again that when it comes to producing, this guy has what it takes! Chalk up another winner for the Isaacs! We wake up every morning thrilled that this family is still working & turning out great work like Eye of the Storm. And if they are ever in driving distance, go. You will not be disappointed!
