Gann Brothers - “Upper Room”
Label: Zion Music Group If you like your Southern Gospel with a lot of steel guitars, fiddles, electric guitars and a strong country beat, then the Gann Brothers’ “Upper Room” is the recording for you. Mixing Country Gospel with a hint of Contemporary, all the while maintaining a good Southern Gospel style, the Gann Brothers have a very unique sound, and one that is pleasing to the ear. I feel “Upper Room” is one their finest recordings to date. I was elated to see one of my all time favorite Rusty Goodman songs included as the guys bring back to life “WE’RE ALMOST HOME.” How refreshing it was to hear someone sing this great song of encouragement originally recorded by the Happy Goodman’s in 1979. The oft recorded, “FRESH GLIMPSE OF CALVARY” is the first of three songs on this recording penned by Greg Day. Previously recorded by several others artists, the Gann Brothers do a great job on their own version of this song. The bouncy “I CAN’T WAIT” written by group member, Kyle Peddie is a fun song to listen to and one you will sing all day long, while the Greg Day penned tune “YOU MADE ME WORTHY” is a humbling song reminding us that we are none worthy, and it is through the finished work of Calvary that we are made worthy. It was great to see the classic Ronnie Hinson song, “THE MASTER’S STRONG HAND” revised. This is one of true classics of Southern Gospel Music from the mid-70s, and the Gann Brothers did very well on this song. The energetic “ALL CAME THROUGH THE BLOOD” reminds us that though “some came through the valley, some came through the storm…some came through the fire, some come through the flood…we all came through the blood.” Former Kingsmen tenor, Garry Sheppard wrote “ONE CLOUD AT A TIME” which encourages us that He will bring us through our storms…“one cloud at a time.” Two songs on this recording that were written by the Gann Brothers themselves, Calvin and Phil Gann, are “TEACH US TO PRAY” and “IT’S REAL (TO MOMMA AND ME).” Both songs are very well written and the latter being a very touching story in song. The group’s current single is the title song, “THE UPPER ROOM” and though it would not have been my choice as a single, it is still a great song and should do well for the group. Closing things out with a rousing electric guitar intro, “WHEN JESUS RETURNS”, is one of my personal favorites of the recording and think it would make a cool single to radio, though my fear is that it strays slightly from the straight and narrow as far as Southern Gospel is concerned. Though Southern Gospel at the core, The Gann Brothers have a very distinctive country sound, though not a hard country sound. Their vocals are easy on the ears and their music is enjoyable. The Gann Brothers have not had a lot of chart action over the years, and this recording leaves you begging to ask the question…why? Personal Favs: WE’ RE ALMOST HOME; I CAN’T WAIT; YOU MADE ME WORTHY; ALL CAME THROUGH THE BLOOD; WHEN JESUS RETURNS Rating: Reader Comments |
