It was Sunday, May 15th – we were headed to a singing with trailer in tow – all of us that is, except for Rebecca. She was returning from a trip to Atlanta with her high school music department and was meeting us at MTSU in Murfreesboro. Fortunately, our singing was also in Murfreesboro, so getting her at 2:30 and making it to a 3:00 PM setup didn’t look like much of a problem until…

Driving across campus, I was so anxious to see my little “melon-head” (that’s Rebecca) who had been gone all weekend! We rode up and down street after street, looking intensely at each building that lined the way, hoping to find her so we could get to the church. Rachel attends MTSU, but was not familiar with the area where we were to meet her sister. All of a sudden, I heard everyone in the van yell, “Stop!” I turned just in time to see a huge speed bump right in front of me! I slowed as fast as I could, but it must not have been soon enough because we now had this funny noise coming out from under the vehicle!

Sometimes we get so caught up in all the activities of life that we just plow over the “speed bumps” causing damage to ourselves and to others. Speed bumps are placed on the road for OUR safety - for a purpose! We have been instructed in the word of God to be good stewards of not only our money and talents, but our TIME. If God worked six days and rested on the seventh, who are we to think we can do more! What good does it do for us to stretch ourselves to the breaking point, all in the name of ministry, to only end up hurting ourselves or even those around us?

“Speed Bumps” come in many different forms. The Lord may be speaking to you about spending time in His Word; it may be a spouse who feels you need quality time together; you may find you are physically tired; sometimes it is getting slack on what is right and wrong, and a host of other things. The Bible says in Psalm 119, “Thy Word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” If you are not spending time alone with the Lord on a regular basis, you don’t have a ministry – you have a habit. If your marriage is troubled, what kind of ministry will you have once the divorce is final? How can you minister when you are unconscious in a hospital bed? God has not “called” any of us to do anything outside of His Word.

I am learning to watch for speed bumps – on AND off the road. When a bill comes due, it gets paid; it has taken almost 20 years, but Tim and I make time for each other outside of being with the girls or out singing; we spend time with Rachel and Rebecca – OTHER than singing; we are at our own home church every time we are not out singing at another church; Personal devotion is practiced in our home – all four of us! Tim was diagnosed with a lung disease almost five years ago – we had not responded to the speed bumps until it was too late. He gets an infusion every week, takes his medicine, goes to the gym, and whatever the doctors tell him to do - now.

I hope you will learn to respond to the speed bumps in your life – they are not there just to aggravate you, but to slow you down for your own good! My van still has a funny noise…

I always TRY to thank God for the things in life that slow me down..... He places them there on purpose.... HIS purpose.... so we can see his side of life.

How many times have we looked back and thought, "If I had only been going slower, I'd have not missed that!" Not just driving; as a matter of fact, more often than not, it has noting to do with travelling, but everything to do with pushing ourselves.

Thanks for the reminder.

I am thrilled for your top 80 for July!

Hey Quicks - I am so excited to hear that "He Can Move the Waters" hit the chart. Wonderful song, well written, and excuted - however, songs like "The Uniform" and "Its a Sure Thing", along with a song that Sally didn't write, "Amazing Grace is the Sweetest Song I Know" really should have more exposure.

God has bless your family has everything that a good southern gospel group needs (including a "nut") - and He has blessed me through your ministry. I love you guys!!

Great article Sally! I've had a few of those speed bumps in life too. One of the things I noticed when they happen to me is that I've usually taken my eyes off of the Lord and been too busy staring at other things in life that were equally important but not as important as Him.

Congrats on your song charting. I can't wait to see if you release "It's a Sure Thing".

Good comments Sally and hi to the gang.
Speed bumps are on streets that have a need to control speed. When we enter the Christian life through the new birth, we are placed on that street and are to move at the speed of the Holy Spirit. It is when we get too fast they knock us down, but it is also when we are too slow, we get hung up and have to meditate and reflect.
Tks
