Why Southern Gospel?
One question in the minds of many people that see the Apostolic Boys in concert is, why is a black gospel group singing Southern Gospel Music? Even though we are not the only black group singing this style of music, those that are, could practically be counted on one hand.
For us it all started when the boys, in their early teens, attended a Cathedral Quartet concert here in the Dallas area. They became fans and went back to church to try this quartet style of singing. With no knowledge of how to sing parts they attempted this new found joy of theirs, and boy was it funny. I will never forget the first song they tried to sing. It was “The Blood Washed Band” by those same Cathedrals. They obviously did not have a clue as to what they were doing, but looking past the mistakes you could see the interest and potential. Therefore, I decided to step in and help them. From that day until now, a lot of progress has been made, and the boys have become better at singing than me.
For us it was a joy to be invited to sing at the 6th Annual Gospel Music Fan Festival. We appreciate the Unthanks for hosting such a wonderful event. Singing at the Fan Festival showed we’re not ready for prime time, but it was a wonderful experience and we enjoyed every minute of it. We were humbled to be on the same stage with such prestige artists as Gold City, Booth Brothers, The Talley’s, Jimmy Fortune and others. It was good to learn from some of the best in the business, and we look forward to using that acquired knowledge to make more progress in singing and ministering to those that the Lord has placed in our path.
