Born Again - What Love
Produced by: Michael Milligan and David Cable
Born Again is a male duet. We don’t see many duets in Southern Gospel, especially male. So, my interest was already peaked before I even opened the package. The guy’s start with an original song called “Life Brand New.” They really start off on the right foot with this feel good tune. Then a chorus of voices backs the guys up on the title cut, “What a Love.” Another original written by group member, Danny Durden, it seems a perfect fit for the duet. Things pick back up with “The Story.” Born Again definitely has their own sound, and pick songs that compliment that. Danny’s rich country tinged vocal seems to be the core of their sound, but Ray does a great job balancing the group with his more traditional SG quartet vocal.
“I Think I Should Cry,” written by Keith Oxendine of the Oxendines, is a moving ballad. “On My Way” features Ray on yet another original tune. Danny is a strong melodic writer, and you find yourself humming the tunes long after the album has stopped playing. There are also a few really great song choices by other writers though. Such as “Going Home,” written of course by Mr. Bill Gaither, as well as the Ronnie Hinson/Mike Payne penned “When He Was on the Cross.” Ray and Danny also do a toe tapping rendition of “This Little Light of Mine.” I was pleased with all these versions.
Other songs include, “Glory,” and the faith filled, “Look Out Satan.” Overall I enjoyed this record. I thought the songs were well chosen and for the most part well executed. The back ground vocals seemed somewhat lifeless or mechanical sounding to me, but fortunately they were only on a couple of tunes. The guys had a few vocal energy and pitch problems, but nothing that was too bad. I thought this record represented potential, and we should definitely keep an eye, or should I say and EAR on Born Again.
