The eastern part of North Carolina brings us the male quartet, Curtis Hyler and Jubilation. Curtis is the resident songwriter of the group who wrote “Get Up, Get Ready” which went on to become a big hit for Gold City back a couple of years ago. Since then, groups like the Carolina Boys, Toney Brothers and Integrity Quartet have recorded Curtis’ songs. All but one song on this recording was written by Curtis and are good examples of his writing.

“WAIT A LITTLE WHILE” is the exciting opening song and sounds like something Gold City or the old Kingsmen would do. This one song alone has all the excitement a male quartet song can handle. Great stuff!

Slowing the pace down, we come to the humbling ”HE CAME TO ME” and the guys do a good job on the song. Dripping of classic quartet sounds is ”A NEW SONG TO SING”. Quartet purists will undoubtedly love this song as it has a distinct Stamps Quartet sound to it. Bass enthusiasts will enjoy the up-tempo ”WE’RE GONNA RISE”, as it features plenty of good bass singing.

“I’LL SEE HIM FOR MYSELF” is an interesting song comparing how a picture is worth a thousand words and how it will be the moment we finally see Christ face to face. A few other songs about the second coming and Heaven is the country flavored “THE NEXT SOUND THAT I HEAR” , the easy flowing “A PLACE CALLED HEAVEN” and “MEETING IN HEAVEN”.

An excellent song of victory is found on the jubilant “AFTER THE CROSS”, while the upbeat “JESUS WILL HOLD YOUR HAND” closes things out.

The group sounds like a mix between the Kingsmen and Palmetto State Quartet. Though this is a really solid recording, there isn’t a lot that jumps out at you. Aside from a couple of songs, the group seems to lack the excitement and vibrancy I know they possess because I have seen them in concert and it does comes across on stage. The key is getting it onto a recording. Give them time though, as they have tons of potential and I know we’ll definitely be hearing a lot from them in the near future, so remember the name…Curtis Hyler & Jubilation.

Personal Favs: WAIT A LITTLE WHILE; A NEW SONG TO SING; I’LL SEE HIM FOR MYSELF; THE NEXT SOUND THAT I HEAR

Deon Unthank's avatar Nice review James. I agree with you that "Wait A Litte While" is a great song. It seems that after the first song the material seemed to blend together. Curtis is a fantastic writer, but I think that if he added a song or two by another writer it would give more diversificatioin to the project as a whole. There are some other great songs on here and if they were separated by some different styles, they would have jumped out and grabbed you. That being said, this is still a project worth having and will be enjoyed by all who get it.
