Guy Penrod - The Best Of Guy Penrod (DVD)
![]() Label: Gaither Music Group Like other "best of" titles in the Gaither Gospel Series series, The Best Of Guy Penrod collects selected clips from previously seen videos and intersperses them with interviews and behind the scenes footage. Bill Gaither hosts and conducts the interviews, at first with Penrod in a studio setting and later on location with the Penrods at their farm. One of the biggest treats on this video is hearing Guy's wife Angie and their seven boys singing "Oh Worship The King." They sing it a cappella and in harmony, and even do a key change. This DVD brings out a lot of details from Penrod's background. He went to college at Liberty University where he sang with a group called the Men Of Liberty. A very young Guy Penrod is shown along with the group performing at Thomas Road Baptist Church during a televised broadcast. Penrod makes some excellent points in one interview clip about the importance of college vs. going directly into singing without formal training. After college, Penrod became a studio singer, singing backup for some of the top recording artists in Nashville both in Country and Christian music. He was also featured on the television program Music City Tonight. Gaither and Penrod begin the DVD with some candid discussion about Penrod's sometimes controversial look. We hear why he wears his hair long, whose idea it was for him to sport the long coats on stage, etc. The discussion then moves to his family life, his farm, and other personal interests. A number of family photos are included in the video. Penrod recalls how he was barely able to be present for a couple of his sons' births due to his singing schedule. There's a small schoolhouse on the Penrod property where the boys are educated, and the video reveals just how massive a task like serving breakfast can be. The grandparents assist Angie with homeschooling the boys, but even so, she's bound to be the poster mom in the Nashville area. Penrod's farm includes a herd of cattle, a faithful dog, and of course, a tractor. There's one amusing story about Gaither asking Penrod what type of tractor he owned in front of a crowd in Moline, Indiana. When Penrod said he had a Kubota, unaware that John Deere's are built in Moline, the crowd gave him a friendly boo. There's plenty of music included on The Best of Guy Penrod...more than 20 songs. The DVD runs for almost 95 minutes, not counting the bonus footage. I wish the full length version of "When Jesus Says It's Enough" had been included. The Ryman Gospel Reunion video released a month or two before the Southern Classics, Vol. 2 CD in 1995, so the video performance of that song was actually the first time most fans saw Penrod in action with the GVB. A number of the clips on The Best of Guy Penrod are just portions of a performance, but plenty of background information is included. Gaither talks of pairing Penrod up with Glen Payne to sing "Haven Of Rest" (on the Joy In The Camp video). Payne didn't know Penrod was going to sing the second verse, so his reaction to Penrod was spontaneous as they sang the final choruses together. Tidbits of information like that help you see the performances in a different light, which is why this video is worth having even if you already own most of the older videos. One tidbit that should make GVB fans very happy in light of recent changes in the group...Penrod said he likes singing in a team setting too much to seriously consider a major solo career. Guy Penrod and David Phelps are the best singers ever in SG music, IMO.

I am happy for Dave Phelps but there is no sound like David and Guy singing together. The group just won't be the same but I wish both the new guys the best! I am sure in a few years, we will all be happy with them, too.

I've already purchased this video and I must say that I've been a fan of Guy Penrod's singing.. unaware that his LIFE is the most amazing thing about him. The man evidently loves his wife like crazy, loves his kids, puts the Bible in to practice by having both sets of parents living close by.
So many times, Gospel music fans have been disappointed to find that some of their favorite singers are less than they seem when you encounter them off stage. It seems their walk with the Lord ends with the concert. Evidently, Guy Penrod is someone who is MORE than he appears on stage. He seems to be.....quite simply.......a Godly Man who happens to be a Gospel singer...

I just bought the DVD last night and brought it home and played it right away. I have always been a fan of Guy Penrod. Having met him at one of the concerts in Lakeland, Florida and in our conversations with my husband and I you could see his sincerity of his love for Christ.
This powerful DVD truly ministers to anyone. As an artist it ministered to me and as Guy says in this DVD God knows your phone number. Really on Christ in all things of your life. God sees the inside and that is what counts for eternity.

I have not yet purchased this video but I can't wait to do so. I greatly enjoy southern gospel although I'm not really a fan of too many people in particular. . .except Guy Penrod. I know he's not perfect but still he is one of my "heros". I admire him for his sincerity, warm smile, dedication to his family and his "practice what you preach" walk with Christ. One person called him the nicest guy in Nashiville. I have heard other SGM singers such as George Younce and Jake Hess commend him for his faith and commitment to prayer. He just seems like an all around nice person and devoted follower of God.
Gaithernet has reported that this video debuted at #2 on the billboard charts, second only to the Eagles. Way to go Guy! I am so happy that this "big ole cowboy" is getting some recognition that he deserves and that I know he is going to turn around and give God the credit for.

I have seen the Best of Guy Penrod on TV several times and enjoy it more with each viewing. Loved meeting Guy's family and look forward to seeing him at the Gaither Homecoming in Richmond, VA on November 12, 2005.

I am a big fan of Guy Penrod as well and I think the video is awesome! But was anyone else disappointed when he said he listened to a lot of country music? He told Bill he had George Strait, George Jones, and others that he played in his vehicles because it was "real life" music.

Does Angie have an email address. I think she should have the mother/wife of the century award, trying to homeschool 6 children is a real challenge even if she does have a Master's degree.
ThankGod she has her parents and his mother living closely by for support. God bless all of them.

I recently saw the Gaither Vocal Band in concert.
They were great as usual. I was just wondering about a bio for Guy Penrod. Has anyone seen one??? I'm just wondering his age.

I've already purchased a collection G.Penrod's and D.Phelp's video tapes. I must confess it's wonderful and indeed inspiring. It has empowered many individuals, families and groups in their spiritual lives. The Lord is great thru these wonderful gospel artists of our times!
Please, I urge that video tapes of some of the interesting music be aired on line free so that many lives will be touched. God bless you.
