Inheritance is a male trio consisting of Ben Scroggs, Aaron Nelson and Dustin Jackson and they hail from Bristow , Oklahoma . I have heard and have met Ben Scroggs on a couple of occasions and this recording was basically my introduction to his new group.

The recording starts off with the uptempo title song "GET READY" and moves right into the traditional sounding, "HAPPY I'LL BE" (which would make an excellent quartet tune). Things slow down a bit for the reflective "ONE HUNDRED YEARS FROM NOW" before the pace picks back up with "PRAISE THE LORD, HALLELUJAH, AMEN". Another song that runs a similar feel is "WHAT A GOOD TIME".

"WE WILL STAND FOR THE CROSS" is a powerful anthem of declaration that we will fight this fight of faith…and we will stand for the cross." The song "COMING INTO HIS PRESENCE" has a light and airy feel to it and I hear some jazz overtones throughout the song as well.

The ballad "THERE IS GRACE" offers hope that through every circumstance in life, there will always be grace to get us through. While "I KNOW WHAT HE DID FOR ME" features the typical Southern Gospel 3/4 time beat, it's a good song of remembrance of what He did for us, while the worshipful "FLOW THROUGH ME" rounds out this collection of tunes, all written or co-written by Ben Scroggs.

For the most part, the tracks and arrangements are pretty simple. I hear so much more potential here that really could have been realized. The songwriting is adequate and the vocals are quite good. These guys do very well, and with the right atmosphere and ingredients, they could create some really great music. By all accounts, this is a good, solid recording.

Personal Favs: HAPPY I'LL BE; ONE HUNDRED YEARS FROM NOW; COMING INTO HIS PRESENCE; THERE IS GRACE

I appreciate you taking your time to review our project. However, would you comment on what it takes to receive 4 stars. I've noticed other 4 star projects you have reviewed and I personally own them and am surprised that this project did not at leats receive 4 according to other 4 stars. I do agree the tracks are simple and arrangements may not be the best. However, this project has received much better reviews among other industry professionals. Finally, being a staff songwriter for a company and a song currently #31 in December I'm surprised the word adequate was used for my writting. As in the world of medicine "Can we get a second opinion?"

James Hales's avatar Ben, thank you for your comments and I appreciate you giving me the opportunity to review your new CD. In the time I have been doing CD reviews here at SGN, I have found it is extremely difficult to be consistent 100% of the time, though we all do try. There is no concrete way of doing them, and there are no scientific formulas either. It’s all subjective to the individual reviewer. And it’s all just one man’s opinion.

With that said, I feel that 3 ½ stars was very accurate for this recording. In our review policy, 3 ½ stars means “A good, solid project.” While 4 stars means, “Definitely a notch above the other albums coming out.” While one may disagree with what may get the extra ½ star, I honestly did not feel yours was that notch above the others. It is an excellent, solid recording, but as I stated, a little more arranging and such just may have given you the ½ star.

As far as your songwriting, calling it adequate was in no means meant to be a slam towards your songwriting. I guess Daryl Williams article this month came at just the right time. Songwriters are very defensive of their songs, and rightfully so. Dottie Rambo calls them her children. Being a writer myself, I wouldn’t even call my own songs adequate, so I’m not trying to tear down the gift that God obviously gave you. There were some really good songs on this recording, and some I will admit, I didn’t care for. Averaging it all out, I came up with adequate. As a songwriter, you will grow and your songs will be great, and there were some great moments on this recording. There is a TON of potential on this project, and my biggest hope for you guys is to see that great potential realized.

I’m sorry if you took what I said as offensive…I never want to be an offense to anyone. Just offering an opinion and some constructive criticism to hopefully make one’s next recording a better piece of work.

Ben,
I personally haven't heard the recording and being a friend of James for almost 20 years, I can tell you that he and I "seldom" agree on what is good and what is not. Our opinions are usually competely opposite.

That being said, I perceived this review as a "good" review. You seem to be offended and I don't understand. It's just an opinion and I didn't see anything negative in it.

It's clear that you have a high opinion of your work. (Evidently higher than this reviewers and you don't feel too humble about it at all)

I for one think that being a staff writer and having a song that is #31 on the chart is a good thing and I congratulate you for it, but I don't see it as being something that definately means you are more than adequate. There is nothing wrong with adequate.

I personally don't have very much "faith" in the charts and their accuracy and fairness, but, it may surprise most to know that James wrote a song that went to #40 on the charts as well. Does this mean he is an authority on songwriting? It doesn't to me. He's talented for sure, but again, it's just an opinion.

One more thing you might want to remember, the controversy/publicity here (be it good or bad) will make people want to go out and buy your project so they can see who they agree with. (but then again, maybe you already thought of that)
See..... Now we have 3 opinions and I'm sure we will be receiving more here as well.
Blessings,

I think 3 1/2 stars is ample for this project. I have heard enough of it. James, You were generous!

I don't know what kind of a fog a couple folks might be in that have given "Getting Ready a score less than it obviously deserves, but i do know that Inheritance Trio's latest cd "Getting Ready" has taken hundreds upon hundreds of people who have exquesite taste in gosple music by storm, to name a few states where they are on the fast tract to becomming a household name in gosple music, Michigan,Georgia, Ohio, Indiana, Tenn. Ok.Louisana,Tx.Co,New Mx.Az.Va.West Va. and thats just a few, sounds to me like It's a case of sour grapes, I would suggest these two folks get real, Inheritance Trio's going no where but up the charts, they have a dynamic sound, whats been referred to as "the tightest harmony ever heard" and their song lyrics are second to none, Mercee.

I think 3 and 1/2 stars is quite accurate. It is a good solid project but does not stand out and rise above the 1000's of other projects SGN recieves every year! Besides, David Phelps only got 4 stars so to be a 1/2 star behind David, I would consider that to be pretty good!!!

Scott,

I really feel that the review process is inconsistant. I just wanted to know what made a 4 star project a 4 star project. Is it based on one persons opinion. James may give it 3 and 1/2 and someone else a 2 and another a 4. Maybe their should be certain criteria to meet to acheive certain stars. I'm also bringing this up for future reviews. This has nothing to do with James, just the process that each reviewer goes through.

Being full-time on the road and putting a lot of my own time and money into all this, I truly did think we were further down the road. That's ok I have no problem eating humble pie. It's good for the soul. They do say "If your eyes leak your head won't swell."

I personally like this cd. Are there more elaborate recordings out there? Yes. To me, with this cd you get the best of both worlds. What I mean is not only is it a good quality project but it's also anointed which to me supercedes the importance of the entertainment value. I've heard alot of top notch groups projects and I have seen them live. To me there are too many of them who sound great but it seems to be a big entertainment production without ministry focus. And you can have both which Inheritance does.
