Inspirations – What a Day
![]() Producer: Martin Cook The Inspirations is a group I have grown up listening to and have always highly respected. With some groups, you never really know what to expect with each recording. With the Inspirations though, you always know you're going to get solid Southern Gospel quartet music. Consistency should be the Inspirations' middle name, as few groups can boast the unparalleled consistency that this group has had in their 40 years of singing. This newest recording continues with that consistency as they sing like they always have. For those who love a good bass feature, you'll love the JD Sumner classic, “GOD MADE A WAY”, which starts the CD off and running, as well as the Sandy Knight penned tune, “IN THE TWINKLE OF AN EYE”. Mike Holcomb shows exactly why he has been nominated and won several awards for his bass singing abilities. The Inspirations have always recorded good, solid Christian based patriotic songs, and this recording doesn't disappoint with “IN THE SHADOW”, which features Archie Watkins, and the Louvin Brothers classic, “WEAPON OF PRAYER”, featuring Jack Laws. Speaking of Jack Laws, he is featured on a song he's been singing for almost 30 years and he sounds as great as ever on the Brumley classic, “I CANNOT FIND THE WAY ALONE”. “HOME A DIFFERENT WAY” is something a little different for the group and provides a profound message and features a little bit of everyone on the verses. “HOPE OF THE AGES” is a little different for the Inspirations as well, and not so much as the song itself, but rather who wrote it. Penned by Bill Gaither, Amy Gaither-Hayes, Ben Speer and Woody Wright, and featuring Matt Dibler, the song actually fits the Inspirations like a glove and is a highlight of the recording. Matt is also featured on a typical Inspirations style song entitled, “GOD IS STILL GOOD”. The Inspirations have had tremendous success in recording songs penned by Ila Knight, and they have recorded her compositions for close to 35 years. There are two songs on this recording that she wrote; “I'VE GOT SOMETHING BETTER” , which features Archie and the title song, “WHAT A DAY”, which closes out the recording. As usual, there aren't any real surprises here. It's the Inspirations as we've always known them. But that's part of their charm, and what makes them who they are. If you a fan, you'll love this recording. If you're not a fan, this probably won't change your mind. Personal Favs: GOD MADE A WAY ; HOPE OF THE AGES; I CANNOT FIND THE WAY ALONE; GOD IS STILL GOOD; WHAT A DAY Reader Comments
Dear James and SoGospel,
Thank you for your favorable and complimentary review on some of my favorite men's music. I was an Inspirations admirer and fan long before I ever met them, or even heard their music for that matter. Living in Asheville, NC since 1963,I heard the Inspirations name mentioned often, going back to the early 1970's. Somehow, I knew these men were genuine in their faith, and that they were true ambassadors for Christ. They had an excellent reputation. Crossroads has been honored to record and release their music on our Horizon label since Spring 2001. It's been my honor and privilege to promote their singles. Sincerely, Jim Stover Crossroads Radio
