Johnny Minick was known for years as the third part of the Happy Goodman Family. Vestal often said that Johnny was the natural replacement when Sam and Rusty were called home to be with the Lord. It's only natural that his first recording as a soloist be a tribute to Howard and Vestal. This CD is some of the songs that the Happy Goodmans were best known for, and were mega hits for the Family.

In this, Johnny's freshman recording as a soloist, he does not push the envelope too far. He simply sings the songs that people love to hear. Minick fills a large gap in the Gospel music industry that was left with the fall of Jimmy Swaggart. No other soloist has stepped into the shoes of Pastor, Evangelist, Singer, and Piano player extraordinaire, till now. Minick fills all those shoes as well as carrying on the legacy of the Happy Goodmans.

“Tellin' My Blues Goodbye,” a song previously recorded by the Happy Goodmans, featured Howard in the past.  However, Minick manages to capture that same magic as he plunges into this song. It's the first radio release form the CD and it's a great choice.

Another song that captures the original feel of the Happy Goodmans is “Who Am I?” Just shut your eyes and you can feel the same intensity that would have been there had Rusty been singing it.

One of my favorite songs on the CD is the title song “The Sweetest Song I Know”. I may possibly enjoy this cut better than the original Happy Goodman cut. The background singers do a wonderful job on this number. My other favorite song on this CD is “Give Up.” Johnny has managed to put a soulful touch to this rendition. This one is a Goodman song with a Minick touch.

Other great Goodman songs include “Brand New Home,” “I Believe He's Coming Back,” “I'm Nearer Home,” “Born to Serve The Lord,” and “The Lighthouse.”

The only song on the CD that was NOT a Happy Goodman hit is “Vestal's Song” penned by Johnny Minick, Daryl Williams, and Aaron Wilburn.  As you might expect it is dedicated to the life of Vestal.

Another interesting part of this CD is that all of the tracks were performed by instrumentalists who originally played on the Happy Goodman recordings.

Normally a solo CD would not get as high a rating unless it is spectacular, and this one is just that, spectacular. Johnny invited some superb and interesting vocalists to join him on this CD such as Russ Taff, Gene McDonald, Reggie and Ladylove Smith, Allison Durham Speer, Angie Prim, and Don Cook, this CD is a step above many that you will hear today. You won't want to miss getting a copy of Johnny Minick's hot, new CD.
