Mary Jane CarterMary Jane Cater is a consummate singer. I don’t think there is anything or any style she cannot sing. She excels at all she does vocally. When I found out she was coming out with a solo album, I was ecstatic! This album was not at all what I was expecting though. I was expecting Mary Jane to come barreling out of the gate with a big band album full of those big ballads I love to hear her sing. Not the case with this recording. She is totally within her element though, on this recording. She can not only belt out those power ballads, but as she proves on this recording, she can sing these old hymns with the same power, excellence and class she is known for.

These songs are musically arranged with simple mountain instrumentation and are tastefully done. From the opening hymn “TIS SO SWEET TO TRUST IN JESUS”, you know you are not listening to just another hymns recording! Other songs include “IN THE SWEET BYE AND BYE”, “GRACE GREATER THAN OUR SIN”, “BLESSED ASSURANCE” (interesting arrangement!) , “THE LOVE OF GOD”, “GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS”, and “NEAR THE CROSS” are all excellently done.

Admittedly, the above-mentioned songs are found all over the place on various hymn albums and arranged in every conceivable fashion, but they seem to take on new meanings on this recording. I was also impressed to see a few songs that you don’t see everyday on a hymn album. “I’VE ANCHORED IN JESUS”, “I’VE SETTLED THE QUESTION” and “JESUS TOOK MY BURDENS” (I hadn’t heard this one in years!) are all very good and are highlights of the recording.

This recording is over before you know it. You are totally enraptured and enchanted by the music and vocals. This is one of the few recordings that leave you wanting more. Now, I anxiously await the next Mary Jane Carter solo recording and pray it’s big band!

 I think those good old gospel hymns are great and Mary Jane Carter does an excellent job singing them. These old hymns are very uplifting and powerful in words. Keep up the good work Mary Jane.
