Master’s Image - “Psalm 100:2”
North Carolina definitely has no shortage of gospel groups and singers, and one of the newest groups from this state is Master’s Image; a male trio consisting of Worth Overman, Eric Nance and Jerry Downey. This is their very first recording and they have put together a positive and encouraging recording with good singing and some pretty cool music tracks. Before I get too far into this review, I will go ahead and say I am very partial to the song, ”JESUS IS THERE WITH YOU.” I have good reason to be, because I wrote the song. Though I don’t hear what these guys hear musically in the song, the guys did a great job with their own arrangement and I am proud of their efforts in the song. Choosing to build their repertoire by using new and original material, Worth and his wife Jenny penned, ”KEEP THE FAITH”, ”WINNING HAND” and ”IN PARADISE”, Eric wrote ”JESUS THE SACRIFICE”, ”STAND FIRM” and ”LIGHT OF THE LORD”, while Jerry’s son Chris penned ”WELCOME HOME”, which has a really cool horn track. Local songwriter Mike Porter penned the remaining songs, ”NOBODY BUT YOU” (which is probably my favorite song on the recording) and ”WHEN I LEAN UPON THE ROCK.” They definitely have a different style and are unique in their own right. At times they have a retro sound with a little bit of funk, and then at times they are strictly Southern Gospel. One thing that I feel will really help them to improve is to allow a little more vocal variety. Most of these songs feature the same vocal on the melody, and a bit more variety on the harmony certainly wouldn’t hurt. All in all though, this is not a bad effort for a first recording.
