Scott’s sophomore project When I Get Where I’m Going starts off with the Hank Williams tune “House of Gold.” Scott has a great country sound and does this song right. Next up is one of my favorite songs, “Daystar.” Scott shows off his vocal range and is quite expressive on this one. Things pick back up with “He’s Watching Me.” This tune earned songwriter Tina Sadler a Dove award in 2002 with the Gaither Vocal Band’s version. Scott knows how to pick ‘em! The title cut “When I Get Where I’m Going” was one of my favorites on the record, though it is not Scott’s best vocal. Featuring Joyce Martin was a smart move, and smoothed out the rough vocal patches on this song. It’s one of those songs that gets stuck in your head and you sing for days no matter who’s singing it.

Scott tackles one of SG’s most beloved anthems, “I Bowed On My Knees,” and though it can hardly be compared to Michael English or even the Brooklyn Tabernacle’s versions, he delivers the song well. “The Gospel” co-written by Jeff R. Steele and Marty Funderburk who produced the record, is a good solid song. Getting your toes tappin’, “Temporary Home” is cut number seven. Gotta love that one! The patriotic, “I still believe in America” provides a good change up.

By far the best track on the project is “He Ain’t the Leavin’ Kind.” Again, not Scott’s best vocal, but he seems the most comfortable in this style and that makes it enjoyable. The album overall straddles the line between SG and Christian Country, and in my opinion Scott should tilt to the country side. “In the Sweet By & By” follows suit, and then the album comes to a close with the Gaither’s “Going Home.” A bonus track featuring Scott’s daughter, “Water Walkin’ “ is a delightful finish. At eight years old, Carley makes quite a good impression. I hope to hear more of her on Scott’s next project.

Scott has an enjoyable country sound, stays on pitch and delivers good music. There was nothing on this project that jumped out at me as great, but nothing that was really bad either. It’s filled with cover tunes, and from what I can tell, leased tracks. Though understandable for artists on a budget, it’s just kind of “there,” and makes me wonder if this was recorded with the purpose of being a table project only. What I heard in Scott’s voice was potential. I think with a few original songs chosen more in the “He Ain’t the Leavin’ Kind” vein this project could have earned 4 stars instead of 3.
