RAMBOS – “The Good Ole Days, Volume 1-15”

Being nostalgic by nature, I was elated to see two of my all time favorite groups releasing some of their albums from the 1960s and 1970s onto CD. I realize these two CD-sets are from two different artists, but since they are being released through the same company (Seraphim Music), at about the same time and they are the same in nature, I’d simply use one review to cover both projects.

The Rambo collection includes close to 30 records being re-released onto 15 CDs. My main gripe is it includes those Vista Records (Heartwarming Records’ budget label which re-released songs that have previously been recorded on their main label). When you include those Vista Records, as well as 4 “Best of…” type records, you get several songs that are repeated several time throughout the set. Why not just release the mainline Heartwarming albums, because roughly 9 great records got missed because of it. But, there was a real gem that I found within this collection. It was the album called, “Softly & Tenderly” that was originally recorded around 1975. This was a budget recording of old hymns that the Rambos and their band recorded. It’s a rare find, so it was really neat seeing that record making the light of day. I hope in the very near future to see the remaining Heartwarming albums of the Rambos, as well as any other rare findings make it to CD.

The collection from The Sego Brothers & Naomi is quite a bit smaller than the Rambo collection, but I am just as thrilled to see these released as well. Releasing 10 records (2 of which being “live” recordings from 1974) onto 5 CDs, this features a mix of music from not just Heartwarming Records, but also from the Songs of Faith record label. I would love to see more from those labels be released, because there is still some great music out there, so hopefully more will find its way to CD format very soon. I was pretty pleased with the choices for releasing, especially one of my all time favorite records, “At Grandfather Mountain”.

One thing to note, these recordings are not re-mastered; these CDs are recorded straight from the records themselves. Either they used mint condition LPs, or used a great program that removes pops and scratches. But nonetheless, it is so neat to hear this great music again and see new people being exposed to our rich history!
