The Montgomerys immediately caught my attention with the Black gospel infused “I’ve Made My Choice.” Written by one of the group members, Jerry Montgomery, the group shows off their talent right away. “Nobody Ever Loved Me Like Jesus,” again features Jerry. He is definitely responsible for the group’s overall sound. You can hear several SG Great’s influence on this young man. The youngest member of the group, John Charles Belisle sings “I Could Sing of Your Love Forever.” Being a popular CCM worship song, this was an interesting addition to the project. In my opinion it was a good decision. The fourth cut on the record, “Guardian Angels” was written and sung by Amy Montgomer-Belisle. There were a few pitchy spots on this cut, but not enough to distract me from the message of the song.
“His Grace Makes Me Perfect” features John Montgomery. The Montgomery’s are a true family group. Six family members altogether, and everyone gets a chance to shine. Unfortunately I felt that starting with this cut, the quality of the sound started to go a bit downhill. I was noticing more missed pitches and the group overall didn’t seem to gel as well as the first part of the project. The Montgomerys do have some great songwriters in the family. This record is truly a reflection of who they are. I enjoyed some of the unique vocal arrangements that they performed.
“Wait on the Lord/They That Wait” starts off a capella, an ambitious move by the Mongomerys. The music kicks in for the rest of the song. “When Dawning Brings the Morning” features Norma and John. It was a sweet duet. Ending on a similar note as they began on, the title cut “Undefeated” finishes off the record. This is also their first radio release off the record. Jerry definitely has some soul. The group has a great ability to blend several different styles into something cohesive. Overall I enjoyed the project. You can tell this family is in it for the right reasons, and after reading their testimony online, I admire their perseverance. Though I don’t think the Montgomerys have reached their fullest musical potential yet, I believe that they will. God has obviously put a song in their heart.
