When I popped in the Needhams self-titled CD, I became a fan within 30 seconds. There is something to be said about close-knit family harmony and well-controlled vocals (a no scream zone here, folks). There’s also something to make you take notice when this six-member southern style group writes their own material.
Opening up the 12-track CD is a somewhat contemporary/country feel with effects and a cappella intro on “Take Time,” penned by Corina Needham, that encourages the listener to slow down and enjoy life (step away from the computer!) as a change of pace. The flow of this project is equally impressive from song to song. The third cut, “What Grandma Said,” is sure to be a favorite. You just cannot go wrong when you a write a song about the convictions of a grandmother and Dave Needham does not disappoint you. The tune speaks of a prayer offered by a person who lived a life of thankfulness. Warm fuzzies all around. No CD would be complete without a song that reminds us of Jesus coming back or going home.
The bouncy, “Someday Soon” track written by Diane Needham Mummert, is musically strong, projecting a happy mood of those expectations. Other favorites include, “Pennies From Heaven,” that features outstanding vocals by Diane in what would be a concert “stool song,” taking things down a notch and reaching for the heartstrings. The album ends with Corina on lead vocals performing “Rock of Ages,” but not the melody and style you would expect of the old standard hymn. Nice melody line, good change-up. Personally, I prefer the original lead line, but that’s okay. All in all, this is a great recording. You’ll be more than blessed.
Other recordings by the Mufreesboro, TN family group include: A Family Christmas, Saved to Serve, Almost Home: Live!, and Ready to Go.
