Bellington, WV has produced an exciting young group, the Shaffers. Their new project, “Amazing Love” is my first introduction to this group but I was quite impressed. They have taken some of your favorite church songs, both old and new, and put a new twist on them.
The title song, “Amazing Love”, is a very popular Praise and Worship song and they have added a little touch of Country to this track to make it their own. “Victory in Jesus”, the great old hymn, has been turned into a cranking, bluesy tune.
“Shackles” is a fun Worship song that takes some if it’s sound from artists like Gloria Estefan. “You Are God Alone” is another very popular Praise and Worship song. The harmonies on this particular cut remind me some of ABBA.
“Lord I Lift Your Name on High” was given a Jamaican beat, changing this song up quite a bit. This made the song not as predictable as it is a song that has been done a lot. They follow this up with a pure Country Gospel tune with a kicking track, “I Would Not Be Denied”.
“We Fall Down” has been given more of a Southern Gospel style and refreshes this song. The Shaffers have included the great Dottie Rambo song, “I Go to the Rock”. They do it with more of a Country beat and the female vocal on this cut is really good.
“He’ll Hold My Hand” is the only pure Southern Gospel song on the project. I am not familiar with this song but it is my favorite on the project. One of the best of the best hymns is “Blessed Assurance”. The female vocal on this song was very good as well.
I am asked quite often by music directors my opinion on Southern Gospel vs. Contemporary Worship. I have not been fast to embrace Praise and Worship music, mostly because it has all but pushed the great old hymns and Southern Gospel out of the church. The Shaffers have proven with this project that both styles can be worshipful and when incorporated together, can be very powerful. Maybe my music director friends should take time to hear this project and it might answer some of these questions.
