Eastonallee, Georgia has given us a fine family of Bluegrass Gospel singers and pickers, the Watkins Family. Their latest project, "Darkness Wept", is a nice album of bluegrass, filled with good music tracks and some very good songs.
They start the album off with a traditional bluegrass style song, "I'll Look To Him".; Following this is their title cut, "Darkness Wept", a very pretty song written by Becky Isaacs and Dee Gaskin. This song reminds me of some of the songs that have done well for the Isaacs and could be a good choice for radio.
"You Can't Wash Your Hands Free". Features Todd Watkins and is another nice tune that picks up the beat a little. "Jesus Is My Lord" and "Letters In Red" are a couple of more traditional bluegrass songs. A really pretty mid-tempo song, "Seasoned Silver Warrior" speaks about one of the dear old saints who have won many battles in their knees. This song is very commercial and would be a good choice for a radio single. It's just one of those kinds of songs that people can relate to.
The Watkins Family has put their own signature on the old song "The First Drop Of Rain". The picking was really hot on this song, but I had trouble understanding some of the words. Dee Gaskin and Jerry Salley have written another great song on this project "He's Still God". This was the first single release from the project. They follow it up with a nice ballad "Love Stood Alone", another Dee Gaskin composition that is their current radio single.
"Roll Back The Stone" is a three quarter time song and features the patriarch of the group, Donald Watkins. Judy Watkins takes her turn on the nice song "Rugged Cross On A Hilltop". This song shows off some very pretty harmony. Brother, Todd, craniks up the tempo with a hot bluegrass tune "Peace Be Still". This song features some hot pickin' that bluegrass fans will love. Next is a beautiful a capella song, "Someday". A capella music is always risky, but the Watkins Family pulls it off without a hitch. This is good singing. The album finishes up with a nice Country Gospel song, "'Round The Last Turn".
I have failed to mention the vocal contributions of Shannon and Lorie Watkins on this project. Both of these young ladies do a great job of singing, and are featured on some of my favorite songs on the CD. Lorie also makes a great contribution to the tracks on the album, playing guitar and banjo
